Just Wondering

My boyfriend and I use the pull out method whenever we have sex. Technically we're not trying for a baby but should I get pregnant we're ready to take on the responsibility of the baby. We have a good relationship and plan on getting married and such and have a plan for what to do if it should happen which is another reason I'm not too worried about the pregnancy stuff. I know it's probably not the wisest thing but eh.

Anyways...my boyfriend and I were having sex on Saturday night (May 2nd) and he came inside me. I'm not on birth control and he wasn't using a condom but we were both kind of caught up in the moment and my period was supposed to start soon anyhow.

Well my period did start on May 5th which is two days earlier then I estimated but what I was wondering, is it possible to get pregnant a couple days before you're supposed to start your period and still have your period? Does anyone know anyone this has happened to?

I'm only wondering because yesterday even though I'm on my period I was sick to my stomach and actually throwing up most of the day. Although the throwing up happened to me before around Thanksgiving so I just assumed I picked up a 24 hour bug or something. And most of today I've had an awful headache but I just thought that maybe that's from the temperature since it's hotter then usual.

I'm not really worried about being pregnant and I don't really think I am but I was curious about the likelihood of getting pregnant days before your period.

The whole implantation bleeding stuff really confuses me. I still have the regular cramping and my period seems to be the same as usual. But then my period really isn't ever heavy. I don't really think I'm pregnant but I haven't had time to really research how likely it is to get pregnant a couple days before your period.

You can do, but it sounds unlikely.

I agree that the pull out method is unreliable - the pill or the condom (preferably both together!) is the best way to avoid worries like this.

I don't think you are pregnant hon. I do know of a person who does ovulate the last days of her period. Strange but doesn't happen often.

Quite honestly, please don't rely on the pull out method as it's not as reliable as other means of contraception. I don't think we have to tell you this as you already seem to know.

Well like I said, I don't believe I'm pregnant. I was just curious at how likely it would be to get pregnant a few days before your period. It's not something that I'd ever heard about happening and it really wasn't anything I'd ever thought much about. I was just wondering if someone else was more familiar with my question since I couldn't find much about it online when I was looking.

I'm aware that the pull out method is unreliable, but I'm very comfortable with my relationship with my boyfriend and future husband. Should I get pregnant, I'd be perfectly happy with it. Like I've stated, this thread was just me being curious.

And bexy_22, I'm nineteen, soon to be twenty.

You can get pregnant on any day of your cycle, including when you are on your period. It all depends on when you ovulate. The time of ovulation can change from cycle to cycle. Some women can even ovulate twice within one cycle (this is rare though). Unless you are tracking temps, mucous, etc., you cannot really know when you are ovulating/will ovulate. Most women with a 28 day cycle (the standard cycle, however, most women do not have this), will ovulate around day 14. A cycle begins with the first day of your last period and ends with the day before your next period.
A women's fertile period will last an average of 7 days. The degree of fertility on these days varies, with one or two days being the most fertile. The fertile period can start anywhere from 5-7 days before ovulation, then there is also the day of ovulation and the day after ovulation. After the day following ovulation, chances of pregnancy are slim because the egg begins to deteriorate. Ovulation usually occurs sooner if you have a shorter cycle. It occurs later if you have a longer one.
Sperm can live inside the body for 3-5 days (some say they can live up to 7, but so few survive that long that it isn't very likely you'll get pregnant). This technically means that if you have sex anytime during your fertile cycle, you could become pregnant.

But like I said, the time of ovulation can vary from month to month, so you can never know when it is going to happen unless you are really tracking it. Even those that track it can be wrong. This is why the pull out method, or as someone told me, "the poke and pull" method isn't reliable at all. Even when you think you might be safe, you might not be.

Thank goodness for human sexuality class!!
