Placenta Previa

I started spotting on Wednesday morning. I was terrified and went to hospital. I had an ultrasound to check the baby was ok - he/she was thankfully but I've been diagnosed with placenta previa. I've been told there is a really good chance that I'll need a c/section delivery.

The bleeding has stopped for now but if it starts again I'll be on complete bedrest, just now it's restricted activity Have been told not not to have sex either.

I'm only 26 weeks. Has anyone had previa early on and had it move up?

On 23rd December at my 20 week scan I was told I had it and we were told no sex, so I had another scan to check at 28 weeks but it had moved up so everything was fine in the end.

Are you booked in for another scan to check it??

Thanks for your reply.

I'll have another scan in 6 weeks which will put me at 32 weeks unless anything happens before then - cramping or more bleeding.

Your placenta can move up hun which means you will be able to have a vaginal delivery but if not then the c-section is the best way to go to prevent you or baby from having problems. Just stay as rested and relaxed as possible and follow doctors orders till the next scan or if there are any problems (I am hoping there are not).

Good luck and

From what I've read, this is fairly common and the placenta can move up. I've never experienced this, but I know you should follow the doctor's orders. Like I said (and the other girls have said too) it could change, so just take it easy and try not to worry too much.

Good luck hun.

placenta praevia

The medical bit of it is that placenta praevia is where the placenta is low lying, either close to or over the opening to the womb.

If it is near the opening, it is called either minor or stage 1-2 placenta praevia and these can move away from the opening as the womb expands with baby.

If it is covering the opening, it is called either a major or stage 3-4 placenta praevia. These do not move up, and you will need a c section.

Hope your scan tomorrow goes well and it has moved up!
