I have never ever used a steamer before so i have a few questions if anyone could help me please??

Can you put 2 different types of veg/fruit on one tray whilst steaming?

How come it takes ages to steam when it takes no time to boil? For example if i follow the steamer food guideline it says that carrotts should be steamed for 40mins yet in the annabel karmel book it says you can boil carrots for upt 20mins...whys that

Thankyou xxx

Seth is on 3 meals a day now. At each meal, I dish him up about what is recommended for his age (or his stage in weaning I think?) which is between 7 and 9 teaspoons of food. I usually give him 9 and afterwards he's still hungry and I dish him up some more and he usually has the same again. He's been on solids since about 4 1/2 months.

As well as these three meals, He's also taking 5 8oz bottles and 2 breastfeeds (naughty, I had stopped but I think Im addicted)

Im just confused because he's eating so much and is constantly hungry, but he's hardly putting on any weight. I posted a few weeks ago he was between the 9th and 25th percentile, and last week he was dead on the 9th. I cant work it out.

Anyway my question was... is it ok to keep giving him more food? Or is there anything I can give him thats more filling? Im so worried Im doing the wrong thing.

So i started my LO on rice cereal for 3 days and i was told to stop as he is big enough and doesnt need the extra padding. so i stopped it. Last week i gave him a little taste of sweet potatoes just because my mom had cooked some plain ones with no salt or sugar for dinner so i mashed up a spoonful for him.
I would like to start him on solids now nad the nurses have recommended orange veg to start with ie carrots, sweetpotatoes, pumpkin
so my question is how many times a day should have this and then when can i introduce fruit?
must everything be at 5 day intervals?
when can i add regular potatoes?
i have been told to wait for 6 months to add wheat cereals and other grains.
it seems every country different advice and ages to do things so im not quite sure whats what really.
my plan is to get him on cereal for breakfast, then a veg meal and a fruit meal a day. obviously by starting slowly but i dont know when to progress from one thing to the next??
thanks

Since I posted my last thread about being scared to start weaning and not thinking Morgan was quite ready, she has changed totally... draining every 7-8oz bottle and screaming for more, wanting her bottles closer together, being extremely restless at night and not really sleeping well during the day so much either....

I know it's not a growth spurt, as she did that a couple of weeks ago, so decided that she is although we're still miles off the 6 month mark, she'll be 20 weeks old on Tuesday, so we gave the baby rice a go this evening!! (Thought I'd also better do it while i had a burst of courage!!! )

I made up one teaspoon of dry rice with some of her formula... in fact, I probably made it a little bit too runny, but was scared she might choke otherwise!!

Morgan wasn't sure with the first couple of tastes, but then she seemed to do a lot better and was even opening her mouth for the spoon!!! :cloud9: She polished off the lot bless her and seemed rather chuffed with herself!

So we'll probably stick at this once a day for a fair few days and see how we get on....

....and BTW, in case anyone wants to know, our GP actually suggested we think about weaning her to help with her reflux and when I saw the HV last week, she was more than happy for us to start, especially if we could hold out to as close as 20 weeks as poss!

I've taken some pics and a video... just waiting for them to upload onto photobucket so I can post them up!!

Since about 4 months old Pierre has been having a couple of spoons full of pureed veg & fruit.

Now he's between 6-7 months and the health visitor said his weight isn't quite keeping up to what it has been and he should be on 3 meals a day.

Well I've got him to have baby food 2/3 times a day but he doesn't have much at all. Maybe just a few spoons full. I've been using the babyfood in jars so I can see exactly how much he's been having and it's often only about1/4 of the jar. Half if we are lucky and that would only happen once a day.

He's still mainly just having his bottles as his main source of nutrition. I give him the food first and then a bottle after but he clearly doesn't fill up on the baby food because he will have a few spoons full and then drink all his milk.

Also he hates baby drinks. He won't even drink water. All he'll drink is milk.

How much should he be eating and what csn I do to get him to have more?

She was having small tastes of foods from 4 months (and I mean a spoonfull) and then at 5 months she started having meals set. She very quickly was up to 3 meals. he is ok for the moment but I am frustrated at feeding two hourly and I know i need to aim for him having meals when i do and to make sure he still has 20oz milk.

I am going to wait until he demands a thurd meal, but knowing him that might not be long. How did you get from this stage to full weaning? What do you do now?

This is just for mothers who have FULLY weaned - I dont want any fights. Tom is on this diet due to medical reasons and all his medical professionals are aware he is on solids.

I know Morgan isn't ready quite yet, as she is still sleeping pretty well (apart from her teething) and is happy with her bottles (she can have anything between 3-7oz of SMA white, 5 times a day, depending again I think on how much her gums are hurting!!). She's still gaining weight pretty well (was 13lb 15oz last Thursday - 18 weeks old) and is steady on the 25th centile.

My MIL keep lecturing me on giving her rice and more (she's been doing this even before Morgan was born... I swear she'd have had me wean her in the womb!!! :dohh:) but I know, and OH agrees, she's not really ready yet.

But just in case, we bought a box of Heinz pure baby rice, some little bowls and some soft-tipped spoons (4m+) from ASDA at the weekend, so we were prepared at short notice!!

I have read loads and LOADS of info on weaning, downloaded charts of Hipp and other sites, read advice on here, have several chats a day on the phone with my mum, and the whole process absolutely scares the bejesus out of me!

I'm sooooo scared of getting it wrong (and fyi, that's not because of any recent threads on here!! I've been worrying myself to death about this for weeks!).... I'm worried how it's going to affect her reflux (although we are starting to gradually reduce her Gaviscon, and so far so good!!)...

I'm scared shitless she's going to choke, cuz she's a bugger for doing it with her milk still!

Am I going to give her enough? Too much?

I know deep down I'm almost looking for obstacles here, making it all harder for myself than it really is!

How can I get over this fear though? Why do I feel like this?

OMG!!! I think my head's going to explode!!!!

ok so ive just been reading mrs-n thread on the weaning situation.

Now im slighty worried, my best friends little girl is 24 weeks we keep intouch via text mostly cos she lives miles away.

anyway i text her the other day to ask how weaning was going cos she had spoke to her health vistor and started weaning a few weeks back now, remember thinking myself bit early, she texted back to say great she has just had stew and dumplings.

Is that ok? after reading that thread i feel stupid to say i have a 7 year old child but i cant really remember how i weaned him and as for me i see my health visitor every week so i would of just taken her advise when the times comes for phoebe.

BUt now im a bit concerned about this whole adult food thing, so any advise i would be greatful.
Thank you

Right thought i would put all my questions in one thread or else i will be taking over this setion! x

When you first started weaning your baby did you just use 1type of puree for the 1st week..eg, carrott, cauliflower etc? Or did you mix to types of purees together?

i know you are supposed to introduce veg first...so where does the fruit come in? Can i offer veg one day and fruit the next or am i supposed to stick to one type of food?

When did you introduce meat into your babys diet?

Can i give fruit purees for breakfast?

In th first week can i alternate what time of day i give my baby food...for example...1st day baby rice for breakfast...2nd day carrott puree mid day for dinner?

Do i increase theamount of spoonfuls day by day?

Do i continue with my bubs normal amount of milk whilst weaning?

Thankyou...sorry to keep going on! xxx

Sometimes she will eat 1/2 a jar, sometimes less, sometimes a little more, but she loves it! She will try everything, the only thing she won't eat is baby rice. Blergh, I wouldn't either!

How is everyone else getting on?

She has 3 meals a day now, she doesn't eat much for breakfast, half a jar for lunch and the other half for dinner. No juice because I want her to get enough milk. I offer her 4 bottles a day, one at each meal and one before bed. She is breast fed though and won't take much from the bottle.
Anyway, I'm so proud of her! Just having a problem with stains. :dohh:

For a couple of days now, Pierre has left about half of his last bottle of the day. Then he wakes up and seems a bit dehydrated. He won't take water or baby juice so I decided not to give him solids so that he'd hopefully drink all of his milk.

Today he finished one of his bottles and left just under a quarter of 2 of them. Now he's about an hour and a half overdue for a bottle and he won't even start it.

I've given him some fruit puree and he ate almost half the jar which isn't too bad.

I'm really concerned he isn't eating enough though. In himself he seems fine. He's not in a bad mood, doesn't seem to have a cold or anything like that. I just can't figure out whats wrong.

Alright, I am still breastfeeding Valerie but for the past two months she has also been having solids. This past month we have been doing about 3 meals (solids) a day. She is an excellent eater and would always eat about the whole jar, sometimes more. Lately though, she has been clamping her mouth shut and refusing to eat anything unless it is peaches or bananas. What is going on? For two months she was eating like a pro and very ready for solids. Now all of a sudden she will only eat these two things?

So max has been eating solids now for 3 months and generally likes everything ..

I do have some problems with feeding him carrots or peas he hates them but i know he needs them so even 4 spoon fulls and im happy

But recently my dr told to start introducing meals ..so I went with beechnut brand who make breakfast jars , lunch and good supper

He loves the breakfast ones ( raisin apple and gronola ) and other ones like oatmeal and fruit and so on even one had eggs and ham lol

But when it comes time to supper which is meats, vegies and noodles he hates them all ..I tried hardy vegies(mixed veg) and he hates it .. I tried chicken noodle dinner and he hated it ..

Now my questions is should i keep trying to feed him his lunch and supper or is ok if he dosent want it? what age do you start forcing per say food with them forcing may nto be the right word but more like pushing :dohh:

i was at the baby clinic for the 5 month shots and they weighed LO
hes 8kg 400 grams, which is just under the 95th percentile and is also very long. Well his dad is very tall and big so im not surprised. Anyway they asked what im feeding him like they do everytime and i said im feeding the breast milk only and rice cereal. and they thought i said real rice-honestly :dohh:
anyway so then i said no rice cereal and they asked me why i am doing this?
so i said coz he really likes to be at the table with us and shows an interest (point blank stares) in food. So they told me that i should stop the rice cereal because hes a almost in the overweight percentile and there is no need for it.
I can start orange vegetables in two weeks if i want. But the rice will just puff him up. They said i should start with healthy eating habits right from this early age.
I didnt know wether to  or
My gut feeling is this is all  but do you think there is anything to this?

Anywhoo he gets his cereal in the am with breakfast but hes still wants his cereal with milk in a bottle before bed time .. Ive tried to stop and he woke up every 2 hrs :( I think i did a big mistake getting him used to it ..Ive tried to feed it to him from a spoon before bed but he wont take it :hissy:
I dont know what to do now ..can he still have this ? I know once hes older and eats more solids he wont need it but for now is it ok to give it to him ..I think its a comfort thing :dohh:

So far we've been feeding Hannah 1 tbsp of cereal in the mornings which she absolutely loves. We were thinking of giving her a bit in the evenings as well but how do I go about it? Her schedule is (roughly) that she has a bottle at 4, 8, and a top up at 10 p.m. before we go to bed. We bath her around 7:45. I do want formula to still be her main source of nutrition so would giving her cereal before her 8 o'clock bottle, say around 7-7:30 before her bath, affect her bottle too much? Should we do it earlier?

Ok so Niamh is now nearly 5 months old 1 month ago the HV told me not to start solids until her weight dropped. So 3 weeks ago her weight dropped and the HV told me i was ridiculous to let that happen and i couldn't get any more stupid! Erm HELLO i asked you last week but anyway thats by the by.

Niamh went completely off milk and only got back into it now she is on solids, she is very happy contented and sleeps 12 hours at night. Also she will not eat unless there is 4 hours inbetween even when she was just on milk.

So now i have started solids and this is what she has.

9:30am 3oz organix cereal water and a 7oz bottle of milk
13:30pm 1 jar fruity type thing water and a 7oz bottle of milk
17:30pm 1jar veggie type thing water and a 7oz bottle of milk
8:30pm 7oz bottle of milk before bed.

i started joshua on baby rice a week or so ago as he was waking loads in the night and he used to be really good.

this is how he used to sleep.
6.30-bottle
7.00-bed
between 3am & 5am- wakes for a bottle
7am ish -ready to get up for the day.

then he started waking loads through the night so put him onto baby rice and he was waking again only at 3am.

the last few nights he has been waking up laods again.

this is how it went last night.

6ish- pure baby rice(1 1/2 teaspoons of dry baby rice with milk) and had a bottle too (5oz)
7ish- bed
11-waked for a bottle,had 4oz. went back to sleep at about 12.
2-woke up and cuddled him back to sleep.
4- had another 4oz of milk
5.30-woke up and came into our bed.
7- up for the day.

im thinking baby rice isnt enough for him.

i dont mind him waking in the night but what he is waking up at the moment is abit too much.

like i said he used to be really good through the night.

any ideas.

this is what he has through the day.

7.00- up for the day
9.00ish- bottle,around 5-6oz
12ish- banana & peach baby rice(1-2 teaspoons of rice with milk) with a botle, takes about 5oz
3ish- bottle,around 5-6oz
6.30ish- pure baby rice(1-2 teaspoons of rice with milk) and about 6oz.
7ish - bed
then wakes when he wakes at night.

oh i forgot to say he is on hungry baby milk.

what can i give him to fill him up?

when we weaned Rhys he HATED it, refused to be spoon fed and hardly ate a thing until he was over a year old. he point blank refused breakfast and lunch every day so in the end we stopped offering it too him, sounds really bad i know but he just didnt eat it. we only started giving it him when he showed signs of actually wanting it. we also did BLW instead of spoon feeding..

anyway...

we just started weaning Ffion and im finding it really difficult to find a routine with her and even remembering to give her solids! like the other day she had 3 meals.. yesterday we were really busy so she only had dinner! of course she didnt mind but i feel like a really bad mummy that im too busy to spoon feed her. she hates holding her food unlike Rhys so im having to spoon feed instead of BLW.

i know it will get easier but just wanted to vent about my failure as a mum and wondered if anybody else is struggling getting used to weaning. :hissy:

So i have bought my little man rice cereal and corn cereal ( both of which say from 4 months on them) which are both to be mixed with formula or breast milk.

I have a few questions:

1. When is best to start him on it for the first try :morning or evening, a friend of mine said morning so that if it makes him sick or hes allergic he wont have a tummy ache in the middle of the night??

2. I know I should start with 1 tsp for the first time, but what if he wants more, and then for the next time how much do i give?

3. Once he is eating it full time , how many times a day should he get it?

4.Hes almost 5 months so in a month i can start introducing other solids like fruit and veg, will he still have the cereals then?

5. I have a rubber spoon for him to eat it off which I heard is better than giving it in a bottle so how thick should i make the cereal then?

6. Should I introduce the rice or corn first , and then how long til i introduce the other one?

7. Do I have to use breast milk, its so hard for me to find time to pump and then when i do id rather save that for a feed ( a drinking one) than the cereal, but im worried to give him formula as it has dairy lactose in it and hes an exclusively breastfed baby. Should i just put the extra effort and pump? Do I need a full bottle of milk for the cereal meal?

Thanks so much!
:pizza:

I've looked for finger food that's organic and couldn't find any ! I brought some organic crunchy carrot sticks from England, but I'm nearly out of them... It seems like Canada is so behind when it comes to organic food!

I'm worried she's having too much food and not enough milk. Last night she had half a jar for dinner, this morning she had half a jar of porridge with some banana mixed with it. She loved it, but again she didn't want her bottle topup and went straight for the boobie!
I bought some Petit Filous (sp?) the other day for me, and my OH asked me if he could have one coz he thought they were for the baby cause they say 'perfect for weaning' on them.

I was under the impression babies couldn't have anything like that till they are 1. But i have also realised i have no idea why i think this? Is it ok to try her on them or am i right on thinking she can't have it yet.
I gave Hannah some last night, she was fussy most of the night but I think it's more to do with teething than the cereal. Anyways gave her some this morning so I could gage her reaction to it better (she's happier in the mornings etc.) and again after the initial shock she was helping me guide the spoon to her mouth  Anyways I guess my question is how much did you give and how many times a day? Hannah had almost an entire tablespoon full this morning on top of her formula (given first of course)

Hi im a new mum to my 4 week old dd. I have been readin on several topics and forums about when is best to start giving babies solid foods and there is loads of different opinions :sad2:

The problem is im currently living with my mum and dad who seem to think its ok to give little one liquidised foods from around 6-8 weeks, now ive told them that advised not to give until around 4-6 months as this is what most books and guides say. They said ive not to be so silly they fed me and my brother from that age im 23 and hes 13.

Now I dont know what to do because tryin to tell them different will only cause fights, can anyone give me advice as to whether or not 6-8 weeks is a bit soon, i myself think it is but dont know if im being silly cause im 1st time mum :shrug:

She seemed to enjoy it after a the initial shock  So I guess we continue with rice cereal for the next few days (once a day?) and than try the other cereals? That is of course if this sits well with her, if it doesn't we'll wait to reintroduce solids :)

Aaron has finally started eating more solids! :happydance: The problem is he now refuses to eat from a spoon :dohh: so everything has to be finger foods.

Any ideas for some nutritious and filling finger foods? His favourite thing is rice cakes, but I'm sure they can't be very filling! I particularly need some savoury ideas as he gets quite a few sweet things and isn't too keen on the savoury. Thanks.

I can't give her mashed up carrot or anything for breakfast so I'm at a loss. I gave her yogurt again.. :dohh:

I was thinking of getting some ready made baby food in but im confused...i was in Boots taking a look and some of them said ''for first tasted 4months plus'' and the tins were smaller...the others said ''6months plus"?...Apparently the ingredients are slightly different...something to do with gluton??
