what to expect when going to a fertility specialist

Hi,

i've just come back from the dr's who have got the results of my "day 21" blood tests which have confirmed I didnt ovulate this month. my progesterone level was 1.5 and they said it should be in the range of 10-80 so its very low.

I'm being referred to a fertility specialist now and dont know what to expect. my dr is a trainee and has been lovely and very helpful but couldnt really tell me.

Could you ladies tell me what the next steps of tests etc they will do?

Hi Fairy1984

I was referred to a fertility specialist last November after having a blood test which came back fine (?) but also an ultrasound which showed up cysts on my ovaries. I had my appointment with consultant gynaecologist a couple of weeks ago and she did the following:-

weighed me (nurse did this)
discussed journey so far
did internal examination (wasn't expecting this!)
Prescribed Metformin for 3 mths
Booked me in for "Hycosy" test to check tubes
asked husband to do semen test (not there and then!)

Have you had an ultrasound to check for cysts? If not they make do this first? Do you have regular cycles? If not probably will check for cysts.

It's a really positive step though so try to stay positive!

For me they did early cycle blood work to check all sorts of other hormones. They will more than likely want a semen analysis to determine if there is any male factor infertility involved. From there, the process varies.....

Hi, thanks for this girls.

I know that I have PCOS so i probably should have mentioned that.

As I have PCOS I asked the Dr if I should loose weight but apparently i'm in the normal BMI range (she said i'm 21.5).

Glad I got the heads up on the examination...I can now go prepared incase I get one too

I'm making excuses in my mind as to why I didnt ovulate this month and telling myself that it might just be this month and not all months etc but i'm not sure how i'm going to explain all this to my OH when he gets in

x

Hey Fairy 1984

Isn't PCOS great! I have been TTC and off the BCP since early June 08 and only had two cycles since then! First step for me is Metformin to try and encourage body to ovulate whilst also having other checks eg tubes and semen for OH
