just diagnosed with PCOS/Surgery wednesday

I went to my OBGYN on Friday last week to get my annual and to talk to him about not being able to conceive for the last 8 months or so. I had tracked my ovulation, cycles everything. This was the first time I had been to him, but I had been going to my annual since I was 18 years old. He gave me an ultrasound and that's when he discovered I had a cyst 5 times the size of my ovary. Its still undetermined which ovary its on, if not on both. He told me that more than likely its PCOS all though they wouldn't rule out a thyroid problem until my blood work came back. I am scheduled for surgery on Wednesday in hopes that it wont rupture and to try and save as much of my ovary (or ovaries) as they can. The Dr. said he is going to try and perform the surgery laparoscopically but he is leaning towards opening me up at my bikini line. The surgery itself I am prepared for I just don't want to wake up to bad news. I realize that many women have this condition and its absolutely treatable but you can't help but worry. On one hand I am relieved to know why I haven't been able to conceive but on the other I'm nervous. My husband is coming home from Afghanistan in March so hopefully by then I will be on the mend and able to start trying. So who else out there has had a cyst removal? PCOS Treatment? Clomid? Any words of advice? I'm so happy this website exists!

hi wanted to let you know my experience...i had a cyst on my left ovary when i was born & had to have the entire ovary removed ( but remember that was 28 years ago so technology has come a long way since then so try not to worry bout the whole ovary being removed as they can do wonders & just remove the cysts now) i came off the pill in nov 04 & conceived after just 6 mths of ttc & had a beautiful little girl in jan 06! I have been diagnosed with pcos last june & we have been ttc number 2 since sept 08....having a lap & dye this wed as have had all the other tests going & everything seems to be fine,

Hi there - sorry to hear of your news but try and stay positive. I was diagnosed in December with PCOS, my ovaries are covered in cysts - some of them very large, yet after a dose of Provera and 2 weeks worth of Metformin I conceived straight away. Still in shock to be honest!
Just wanted to let you know some good news! I had been TTC for years and then was diagnosed and a month later got my BFP.
Hope the surgery goes well on Wednesday! Please keep us updated with your news x

hi zookeeper a lap is where they insert a camera through ur belly button & have a good look at your reproductive organs like uterus, ovaries etc....if they see endometriosis or cysts they can usually remove it there & then depending on the stage that it is at....the dye part is where they insert dye thru ur fallopian tubes to see if they are clear or blocked....good luck for ur scan tomorrow x
