Advice needed about upcoming ivf cycle and bmi of 28.6

Hi everyone... ive been LTTC for 4 years now. Have always read posts but never had the confidence to post. I am now in a bit of a dilemma and need some advice from all of you nice people! Weve been waiting for a funded cycle of ivf. we have just been told that we can start treatment in mid december. Had a meeting with the clinic today and we discussed my weight and recent test results. Have a high FSH and they mentioned risk of overstimulation of the ovaries. They also said that although i have bmi 28.6.. under 30, they mentioned a concern of medication / injections passing through the fat! Anyways, i was given the choice of starting in mid december or next month in an attempt to lose some weight. What would you guys do? Start now or wait one month? Has anyone else been told about these difficulties with bmi 28.6??? I thought this was an ok bmi... i know its still over weight... but stil below 30. Any advice please??? also has anyone had overstimulation of ovaries during an ivf cycle?? how did your body react?

hi , i dont know about the BMI and over stim but its always a good idea to be as healthy as you can. a healthy diet will contribute to success hopeully
what did the hospital recommend you do, they must have experience of this. Listen to them and then go with how you feel

fingers crossed

Hi Breeze,

Personally I would wait a month if the hospital has suggested it might be a good idea. I would rather wait for one extra month for my only funded IVF cycle and have a better chance of a than go ahead with less chance.

I know it's hard waiting and you have to do what feels right for you and your partner, but that's what I would do.

Hi
I am having ivf privately next year my bmi is 34 and my consultant was happy for me to start my ivf straight away so personally I don't really think it is an issue. I did say I wNt to lose weight to help and he told me to do it gradually as a crash diet won't help prior to ivf. If I was u I would go for it good luck x

Hi Breeze

We'll be starting IVF ICSI in Dec too!!

One criteria of NHS funding was a BMI of 30 or under, once we choose our clinic the booklet they sent stated they would only provide assisted treatment if both partners had a BMI of under 35! So actually they are willing to go 5 more over the NHS limit.

We had our consultation appointment this week - they have to explain any possible issues that may arise and sometimes this can sound scary.

Maybe you could start making some small changes in your diet - you might be surprised how some small changes can make a difference, even before your start date in December.

I also agree with Oneday!

Wishing you lots of luck

I am going through a similar struggle. My clinic said they don't have a bmi limit. Success is greater at a lower bmi - so I am trying to lose weight - but I am not sure if I should delay ivf and lose more weight or go ahead.

I wish you luck in your decision.

Hi Breeze - we are having our NHS cycle early next year and the criteria when i was put on the NHS list was that i must have a BMI of under 30 - i looked into the 'private' side of it at my NHS clinic and they had no weight limit.

At the end of the day you are a healthy weight and BMI is all relative - you could be well built with muscle and have a high BMI but there may women who weigh less with more fat!!

If you feel ready to go now then i say go for it - so long as the past 3 months have been you taking the right food and supplements to get your eggs nice and ready and your DH has done the same, embrace the next step!

Nurse said that it might be best to just take a month to calm down... bond with hubby and sort out work stresses for the new year to hopefully bring me our lil eagerly awaited baby! Fingers crossed for all of us in the 2010 ivf club!!!! its our year girls!!!!
