Hi all,

I am new here - been ttc for a while now but no good news im afraid. I have a history with block tubes and one damaged ovary so have made an appoinment with a fertility specialist. Was hoping that I would get a BFP naturally but I think i was being a bit too hopeful - probably should have made the appointment long ago.

Anyway, my appointment is next week and I was hoping for some advice on what to expect. I had a lap and dye done some years ago and it showed blocked tubes and the damaged ovary. Do you think they will do another lap and dye or is there any point? Is IVF my only option if my tubes are still blocked? I am in my late twenties - what is the success rate for IVF for someone like me? How long would I have to wait to be ready for IVF?

I am disppointed that I have to go down this road but I am so excited on the other hand because there is hope.
I would be really gratefull for some advice.

When you see your specialist next week I am sure you will feel alot better as they will tell you what they recommend. They will probably do a hyscosy/HSG and take bloods before deciding on another laparoscopy. I think it is a good idea that you are going to see a FS due to your history. Hang in there and remember to take it one step at a time. You will achieve your dream of having a family, and it may be a bumpy road to get there, but you will get there I am sure. Some ladies fall first go with IVF, other ladies may need a couples more cycles. Its normal to feel a bit down or sad that you haven't yet been able to conceive naturally. This is a great place to talk about what you are going through and ask qns as there is a wealth of knowledge and support here. Good luck on your journey, may your visit here be a short one!!!

I think it is great that your going to see a FS, I am not sure if they will run those tests again, My FS didn't as my tubes were blocked and there was no way to open them. I had a tubal reversal and then a second op to try again but no luck.
They will probably do some bloods to see if your ovulate each month and possbily just get the ball rolling on IVF.
Nobody wants to have IVF everyone would LOVE to just concieve naturally, however we are so lucky to have IVF available, without there would be millions of couples without children.
The success rate is fairly good in your 20's and if your eggs are all good etc I would say your chances of concieving first round go would be 1in2 or 1in3. Like lioness said, Some women concieve 1st round, some many need a few more rounds, but most usually at the end of their journey have a little bubs.

I saw a fertility specialist this summer. Been trying since June 08 but have previous proven fertility with my husband when we were very young and very silly. I still had doubts in the back of my mind as my mother told me some years ago I was infertile (the Drs told her that when I suffered kidney failure as a child supposedly). I had an internal scan, blood tests at 21 days and 2-5 days to prove I was ovulating and the dye test. I was devastated to discover its my OH with the problem and not me. Our chances are now slim but we are entitled to IVF in another 2 years time. I know different areas have different procedures but thats roughly it in a nutshell. Good luck

It all depends on where you are - i.e. NHS or going private.

We had our first FS appt and had our bloodwork done first along with an SA for DH. I had a transvaginal scan done and HSG to see if my tubes were blocked butsince they weren't, nothing more was done apart from some blood work.

There was a 12 month wait for NHS IVF but we were put on the list in Feb of this year and we have our planning appt next month - our long protocol cycle will start before the 12 months is up.

IVF for the under 30s has a high success rate - if you are paying then definitely shop around for the clinics with the best results that are closest to your home so they minimise the amount of stress and intrusion.

I'm guessing after you have had your FS appt then it will be clearer what the way forward will be - hopefully it won't take you too long to get there
