27 eggs-only 1 emby-abnormal eggs?

Hello,
just been given the dreadful news that out of 27 eggs, we only have one poor quality embryo to put back(only two fertilized, one stopped developing over night)-We are going ahead with the 2 day transfer tomorrow whilst remaining realistic that our chances are slim, and we may even get the call to say that our poorly embie has also stopped dividing-I am really hoping to hear from others that have had poor fertilization rates as, i just don't understand it-The embryoligist said that the sperm and eggs were not recognizing eachother, and then went on to say something about the outer layer of my eggs, what i can't understand is that my fsh and all other blood work has been well within normal ranges-We have been told that icsi is our next step, just need some hope from ladies in the same position.

Oh hun i am so sorry to hear this, my prayers are with you your surviving embie keeps fighting. Did he say something like your eggs had fragmentation issues? How are your DH sperm?

I have a similar case but i only got 5 eggs and 4 were rubbish and they ICSI my only egg, which went on to be a perfect A grade, i did manage to fall pregnant but unfortunately i didnt have a heartbeat at my 1st scan.

What kept me going was at ET, my specialist said that they all came from 1 embryo and you only need 1. Thats all you need hun. Just that 1 hun. Its a tough road ahead but we are here for you.

Hi Dilek,.....thanks,still trying to digest the news, never thought something like this would happen, but trying to put a brave face on.
The lady who called just said that this morning, the sperm were still swimming around, and all she said was that the sperm and eggs were not 'recognizing' eachother at all, spermies were just swimming around and something mentioned about the outer layer of the eggs-if we make it to transfer tomorrow, my husband is going to ask for a more in depth explanation,.....i just don't have a very good feeling about this at the moment

I really dont know much but can they inject a sperm into the egg if the sperm was not recognising it? Maybe this could be a reason to your unexplained inferility.

Hard as you may find this to understand and while this cycle may indeed be compromised it sounds positive to me. You may want to document yourself further on that but as Dilek puts it above, if this is the reason for your IF, once sorted and as soon as you do ICSI you ought to be in with a great chance since you have no other issues to suggest problems with implantation or gestation!

In fact, if I recall correctly, fertilization problems are giving you the best chance of success as opposed to implantation problems or immune issues, etc.

Oh hunny - I'm so sorry.

My FS did say to me - when I was moaning about being unexplained and that there just had to be a reason - that sometimes it is only at the IVF stage that they find out why we havent been able to conceive all along.
We are all praying for your embie - and that little surviver could still make it sweetie - cos dilek is right and you only need one, but if the worst happens and its a BFN - then at least next time you are going into this knowing that you can have ICSI and that you responded really well - cos 27 eggs is brilliant.
ICSI has really good success rates.

Its shit - and god knows we all want to make this first time - but we are fighters - we've got oursleves this far - and we have to view the first go as an investigation. My first go didnt work - i didnt really respond that well - and so this time they have upped my dose and things seem to be progressing better. So as much as its shit and painful and dissapointing - at least you are going into your next round armed with more knowledge.

So sorry hun - hang on in there for a bit longer.

I am crossing everything that your embie makes it sweetie.

Thanks Missama and Dilek.
Dilek-yep, i think what you are talking about is icsi, which is now what we will be aiming for next year i guess.
Misama-thanks for the reassurance, i think i am just freaked out by what has happened, has given me abit of a knock, but will shake it off in a few days.
It's very comforting to be able to log on here and have such great support from others who understand.

Isn't she a sweetheart? If her and I were in a 70s show we could successfully play good cop-bad cop. So sorry if I sounded insensitive and not appropriately reassuring mwmm, I am just the "see future silver lining" kinda girl and it's really good news IF you need another cycle which I SURE hope you do not.

To counter, one of my closest friends had 14 eggies and only one barely making it on day two and his name is Lochlan and is in water babies today!

Not at all,, no offence taken, it's good to have some positive feedback if anything, so am really grateful, is also great to know that your friend had a good outcome from one poorly emby too, gives me abit of hope.
