PCOS - Metformin?

Hi Girls,

I'm new on here, we have been trying for a year now. I have had some tests done and have been diagnosed with PCO, my periods are regular and i'm not overweight. My progestone levels are too low for me to ovulate. My CD21 blood test came back in September negative. Just had another one but came back inadequate as the hospital left the blood for too long. Now going back next month for another blood test to see if Metformin has helped.

The consultant has put me on Metformin for 3 months. I have been on it for a month now. Are many of you on this? as I read alot of success stories with Clomid and I wondered why he hasn't put me on this?

Really apprecite any feedback, I don't have any friends with PCOS and would love to speak to someone who has gone through this.

Kelly xx

hi hun

I have pcos and was given metformin as well. In my experience not all Dr's like to perscribe clomid to easily. I would also assume that if you cycles are regular and you dont have a weight problem you just need something to help regulate your hormones and see if you ovulate yourself, which hopefully met will do for you.

Clomid will trick your body into ovulating, it cant hyperstimulate your ovaries which is dangerous and you need to be closely monitored.

So I would assume from a Dr point of view its less work to give you met, especially as the likelyhood of it working is quite high.

Hope this helps and i didnt waffle to much! We have a PCOS Club thread if you want to take a look.

Sarah

argh thank you hon for your information, is so nice to speak to someone who understands and can give me advice on what they have been through. The consultant didnt really explain why he wanted to try me on metformin he just suggested that i should try this first. Will have a look on the PCOS club. xx

Good luck with it. You may get side effects but for me these past within a week or so, so stick with it!

Hiya. I also have PCOS and when i first went to the FS he gave me Metformin to try and it did help stabalise my hormones and i did get a shorter cycle (i had long cycles) but then it went back to normal so after 3 months he gave me clomid. I'm still taking the met now as my FS told me it can substantially reduce the risk of miscarriage.

I've been taking it for 7 months now along with clomid and i am now producing eggs every month.

Good luck!
