How did you get diagnosed with PCOS

I've been looking this up lately and have a lot of the symptoms:

Irregular periods
Struggle to keep on top of my weight
Been ttc for over 12 month and have had 2 m/c i've read that PCOS can be linked to m/c

If i went to the Dr to ask to be tested would they take me seriously or send me away???? I know we can all self diagnose and get it wrong but it's something i think is worth getting checked out

Hiya, I have PCOS. I was TTC for probably going on 2 years and had one m/c... and my dr. never thought to test me... then when I moved house I went to sign up at my new drs and they did a full medical. I told them that I had been TTC for a very long time and they did a test to check my hormone levels. The test came back showing that I had too much or one hormone and hardly any of another hormone, so they then sent me for a HSG... which confirmed that I had multiple cysts on my ovaries and a blocked tube (I wasn't expecting the blocked tube). I had by this time read up on PCOS and realised it was this, and I returned to my dr who confirmed it and referred me to a gynae.

I would definately ask you dr. about it as if you do have PCOS you have a higher risk of diabetes as well as other things... including infertility. They should send you for tests then if needed you will receive necessary treatment to help you conceive.

If your dr. tries to avoid the subject, which some do as they don't know too much about PCOS... be firm.

Good luck and let us know how you get on on Monday!

Chellebelle - So what steps did they do after they sent you to the gyne, due to the PCOS. Are you on medication and if so, was it a quick turnaround (if you don't mind me asking)

I suffer from anovulation and do not get periods. (Maybe 1-3 a year tops.) When I was younger, they simply put me on the pill and sent me on my way. Then when I was about 23, they took my concerns seriously because I started bleeding for 3 out of every 4 weeks because of the hormones in the specific BCP that they had switched me too. They did an internal ultrasound and found no cysts but in the blood tests, I have extremely high testosterone (<--- IMO, that is really embarrassing to say to people. ), slightly low estrogen and other hormones and weight gain. (I now know I am Insulin Resistant as well but that was not learned at the time.) Basically, they called my work, told me I had PCOS and said, "we will deal with it when you want to start your family." Now that I want to start a family, my current doctors are like, "they should have addressed the ongoing issues years ago." UGH! Oh well... now I have doctors that do care and will help so that is happy.

If you are worried that you have PCOS, ask for blood work. Make sure they test your testosterone along with the other hormone levels. GOOD LUCK!!!

Looks like i need a trip to the Doctors - i've just been readin about how it makes it harder to loose weight i am constantly on a diet and exercise but find it soooo hard to shift any weight i'm not massively overweight but i don't eat a great deal linking that with the other symptoms just made me think PCOS is a possibilty. I'll let you know how i get on x

Sorry for the late reply, just seen the message. I was sent to the gynae to be seen within a month, who then referred me for a laparoscopy... which was for a week later. I went for the lap, but whilst I was waiting I saw the head GP and she said as I have one fully working tube I don't need a lap, however, as I have PCOS she prescribed me with 100mg Clomid for 3 months. This was given to me straight away and as my last round ended I received a letter from the hosp asking me to return for an update, and I was prescribed with another 3 months, and if this doesn't work, I have to go back in May to start IVF.

So all in all, from HSG to actually starting Clomid, it took no more than 2 months. I hope this helps.

Good luck Jo! I am not overweight, but recently I have been struggling to keep my weight down, but I don't think the Clomid helps.

I got diagnosed (after self-diagnosing) by ultrasound. Thought I was pregnant, went to the doc and there were all the nasty cysts all over my ovaries..and no baby. That was not a cool day. They coupled the US with some of my other symptoms, overweight, irregular periods, etc and they diagnosed me. It took from Jan-Sept, an HSG, surgery and two cycles of clomid and now I'm pregnat. It CAN happen, so don't give up!

painful af

Hi, the came today and had to leave work today as the pain was so severe! I have no idea why. But I know that my cycle is very long and painful now. I'm wondering if I have pcos. I have an appt with consultant on friday. Have already been told last time that tubes are ok after hsg so don't know what they will say. Will they be able to tell from hsg if I have pcos. Any ideas?
