IUI with unexplained infertility

We had our pretreatment consultation at John Radcliffe the other day. We were basically advised to go straight for IVF. We have unexplained fertility, all tests normal, although scan did show 2 endometrial cysts on my right ovary.

However, I asked if we could try IUI first as I am generally reluctant to take lots of drugs and have invasive procedures, although I will if it comes to that.

What I am interested in is whether anyone has had positive outcomes with IUI where infertility has been unexplained? I want to know if it is a waste of time, and whether I should go straight for the IVF?

Many thanks

Caline

Only just found your post so hope you are still checking to see the reply! WE had IUI with unexplained and it worked second time. You still need to have quite a few drugs but nowhere near as many as IVF. I wasn't at all convinced it would work due to some other friends experiences so asked to go straight to IVF. They refused because of my age (only 32) and said to try IUI. They said if I was over 35 they would have recommended straight to IVF.

Hope that helps.

I am 36, and also have Unexplained Infertility. My doctor suggested Clomid and IUI before moving to IVF. I tried Clomid last cycle, and am now taking a cycle off because he said the residual effects could still work (fingers crossed!). We are then taking one more cycle off (trying acupuncture!) but after that, we go to IUI. He said he would do up to 6 tries of that before moving to IVF, if we want.

Hi i have unexplained infertility and have been advised by fertility specialist to undergo upto 4 cycles of iui whilst waiting for ivf. Both have waiting list for me. I asked about success rates which i believe aren't very high but fs plans to use high dose drugs to increase our chances.

I guess it all depends on your FS as to which way they recommend. As for me, due to just turning 36 (Aug), my FS sent us straight down the IVF line due to my age as he wanted to optimise my time vs treatment success rate. I've had all the preliminary testing as well as a lap followed by 3 rounds of Clomid with nil success so far. Best of luck on your journey, hope you get your BFP sooner than later
