USA Girls - Question about DH going for SA

We're in New York. Does DH have to get an SA ordered by his PCP or can I just call any fertility clinic and make an appt for him to go??

Hi Chris,
I'm in NY as well. Both times my dh went for a SA, he did need a primary care doc referral. He's got Oxford and they require a referral. But it's pretty easy- just choose one of the fertility clinics that takes his insurance (they are much better about doing the SA the right way than an ordinary lab) and have his pcp fax a referral.
Hope that helps!

Helps a bunch! Thank you! We have Empire BC/BS PPO...so don't think they require a referral. I'll call them to double check though. Godforbid DH does all this.

I know what you mean...how hard is it?! Apparently very hard for men- maybe it's the apprehension about the SA. If they had to be poked and prodded like we do in this process, no one would have kids.

I would definately try to go straight to a fertility clinic. We are in Texas, but went first through the pcp, then to a urologist, who then made him redo his test at a fertility clinic. He said they do a better job with the analysis, etc. I would just skip the steps for your hubby if you can! That is hard enough as it is.

My OB/GYN ordered it for my OH, but your fertility specialist should be able to do the same. I also have BC/BS PPO and didn't need prior approval.

If you have a consult with the fertility clinic and are a patient of theirs then they will order it. However, I hadn't established care with my fertility clinic because i was unsure if there was a problem yet. So, my GP sent over an order to have it done. It was an easy process to get it done.
