I think a referral to an ENT (Ears, Nose & Throat) doctor is a good idea. With the use of the nebuliser and steroids, hopefully the stridor will start to settle.

Tommy's is supposed to be one of the best hospitals around for paediatric specialists, though. Good luck! x

Hi MaxsMummy I think Freddys friend in the unit had something similar as she was ventilated for months and in the end she had such a bad rough breath where her throat was so ruff from the tubes, I think she went to st ormands st to operate and i believe she is doing much better now! I wish you both well xx

My 24 weeker had stridor and still does sometimes. It was caused from intubation as well as a paralyzed left vocal cord from his PDA surgery. Needless to say he makes very little sound when he cries, you can hear him but its raspy and weak. And always has been.

We have been to ENT and had him scoped several times without change.

Your son didn't have PDA surgery did he? If he did there is a chance he has an injured vocal cord, its a very common result of PDA surgery because the nerve that works the cords is near where they operate while closing the PDA.

If it's just stidor caused by intubation, it should get better. I have only heard and read of a few cases of preemies where their voice never returned to normal. That being said, they could still talk and be heard, they just had a raspy and quieter than normal voice.

Which is what my son will have. It's not as though he makes zero noise. =)

I hope this helps, I would get to an ENT ASAP as they will have the best advice and clearest picture of what is truly going on.
