Hi
Poppy had baby rice with EBM for lunch for a week, then we introduced carrot for a week then other veg, then started breakfast and eventually dinner. I was 'told off' a bit for going too slowly but I felt as if I didn't want to rush Poppy onto red meat etc too early as she still felt quite little to us! She took to it all fine though and we're lucky we've had no real food issues as yet.

Good luck xx

thanks Bec,

got a bit of a lecture from paediatrician basically said Matthew is almost 'underweight' for his height! He's 26 weeks old, 13lb 6 oz and 64cm long HV/GP have never indicated his weight is an issue as such as he's steadily gained along 9ith centile but never really went by his lenght before. He wants us to try get him to take more feeds and get started on solids ASAP.

The medical profession are in my opinion in too much of a rush to fatten our prem babies up, Matthew is a long baby, happy, contented and very healthy his weight will balance out once he's established weaning.

Will continue to start weaning at lunchtime and build it up next few weeks, presuming I dont introduce fatty things right away like cheese etc as surely its too rich for him at this early stage.

I can only offer him an extra oz with each feed but I know he'll only take 7oz 4x a day and sometimes doesnt finish that, can only give him what he'll take. Reluctant to wake him at night for an extra feed as he'll get too used to it and will always wake, hes such a great sleeper now and I dont want that to change.

AHHHH FRUSTRATING OR WHAT, sorry just rambling now and needed to vent x

Weaning is an absolute minefield isnt it!! Bit of background; Brooke is now 7.5 months and weighs 11lb 7oz.

I started Brooke off on Babyrice-that lasted two days
I then gave her veggies-a new one every 2 days. Nobody gave me any help or advice on the subject so I just guessed and went at my own pace.
By the time she was 6 months, I had put her onto 3 meals a day.Plus bottles!

She then started being really fretful, waking at night more frequently, generally being sad. I tried loads of different things then decided to cut out her lunchtime meal. . .it worked like a charm. Think I had been overfeeding her?!

So, now her routine looks like this:
Wakes and First Milk at 6.45
Breakfast-EG babyrice and Fruit puree at around 8am
Then Brooke only has milk on demand between 8 and 5.15-although I have slowly started giving her a snack at lunchtime-today was a carrot stick to suck!!
5.15pm is dinner time-so now she has pasta, chicken etc and half a fruit pot or soya yoghurt of some sort

then Milk before bedtime at 6.45pm. she wakes at around 2.15am for milk.

TBH I think its just playing around with things until you get the right amounts for him. Its a complete minefield. I hope things go ok-good luck!

PS-sorry for the long post

I'm quite the opposite. My HV announced she had spoken to the paediatric dietitian (who we've never met) and they had decided Abby would be weaned at 6 months.

Yeah, I think I'll be the judge of that

I have heard you should start with something like pear as it is easy to digest and not too citrussy. Like Dona I am armed with the Annabel Karmel book ready to wean my LO in a few months. My OH sister used the book and she said it is great and easy to follow.

I still can't believe that you wean using the uncorrected age, I always thought you should go from the corrected age. Using the uncorrected age means I will be weaning my LO very soon and I have only just go her home (she was in hospital for 3 months)...feel like I will miss out on the whole bottle feeding full experience...oh well...at least she is healthy, that is all that matters.

Good luck with your weaning...

if Emily is not ready at her corrected age and your not being pressured about her weight enjoy this time and wean her a little later, if shes on iron supplement then you dont need to worry about introducing this. My GP wanted to wait til he was 6 months corrected as we tried before and this was too much for his digestive system, however the Paediatrician specialist had concerns about his weight so were taking it slow x

thanks girls, have been on the Annabel Karmel sight which ig great, gonna get book tomo i think so far Matthew has had baby cereal mon and tue, baby rice wed with stewed apple and today a tny bit of natural yoghurt with stewed pear and devoured the lot! His wee legs kick like crazy as soon as he ses the bowl comng ha ha x
