PGP - Pelvic girdle pain (pelvis and hips)

Hi there,

I was wondering if any of you have suffered from this during this or any previous pregnancy? I've been really struggling at night with my right hip and wake up constantly in agony!! I figured it's due to the pelvic muscles relaxing and the body getting ready for baby to come... but does it have to hurt so much??

I picked up a baby magazine yesterday and when flicking through it came across an aticle on PGP where they described EXACTLY what I'm suffering with. DH thinks I should call the midwife and get refered to a physio (which is what they recommend in the mag) but I don't want to seem like a hypochondriac (spelling?). This is our first pregnancy and I'm not trying to be a hero... I'm just aware that I should be uncomfortable and will experience pain... I'm just not sure when and how much! (does that make sense??).

Any advice is welcome... thanks for reading! xx

Hi,
Have had the same problem myself and also work in a Physiotherapy department. Think it would be worthwhile to get someone to look at you- can get very painful as the weeks go by.
They will most likely give you some exercises and possibly a belt to help the pain. I sleep with a small pillow between my knees at night and find this reduces the pain when I roll over.
Hope this helps and best of luck

I have acute SPD (Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction) which is extremely similar to PGP, so can relate to your agony. I've been on crutches for weeks now, and in constant pain.

Physio will definitely help, so it's worth getting referred straight away. They give you exercises, and they do ease it a little. I find night-time especially hard, but like bimglebump said, a cushion between the legs helps. Something else I found helps is to remove the fitted bed sheet, fold an old quilt in half, put it on my side of the bed, then put the fitted sheet over the top. It means you still get the support of your normal mattress, but get a bit more padding and it helps with the hip pain.

Good luck hun, and don't suffer in silence.

Thanks hun... i do sleep with a pillow between my legs and one under my bump to keep my hips at a better angle and support the ever increasing bump... unfortunately it's still very painful. I will def call my midwife tomorrow.. thanks for your support!!

Ah hun... You can more than relate to my agony... I'm sorry you're in so much pain!!! That's some great advice and will try it tonight. I promise I wont suffer in silence ... I just needed confirmation from you lot that I'm not being a big baby and should just deal with it!

Thanks for your support and I hope that you feel better soon hun

Isn't it awful how we all feel we should just deal with things? Sometimes I just want to scream and throw a massive tantrum and shout about how much it hurts. But I don't. I just carry on suffering.

One other thing too - you can get prescribed co-codamol for the pain. The codeine can make you constipated, and if you take it for months and months, the baby can have respiratory problems. But just for a few weeks, and to take the edge off, it's not going to harm LO. I take 8 a day on the days I'm at work to see me through, but then try not to take any on my days off. I only had 2 yesterday, and none today.

Oh, and I hope you're like me - mine went last time as soon as Charlie was born. I had an elective C Section on the Thursday morning, had my catheter removed on the Friday morning and practically bounded out of bed after!!!!

if you are waking up that often, then you are not being a hypochondriac. It's my first pregnancy, and I have had a few twinges here and there, the odd bad night, but nothing like you are describing. Go n get yourself sorted, a lass in my yoga class has these problems quite early on, went to physio, and now is feeling ok again!

Yeah... It's crazy, at least this forum helps as we can ask here before phoning the midwife

Thanks, I'll see what they say tomorrow... no doubt they'll recommend paracetemol...
