Anyone an expert on maternity allowance / benefits??

I've not thought about this before, as i just assumed i wasn't eligible for anything, but now i'm not so sure. Can anyone shed any light?

I was working full time until Aug 28th this year - then my contract ended and i was on bed rest so unable to work. Not been claiming any benefits in all that time as i'm not eligible due to being a homeowner and my OH's wages etc.

I've looked at the You Gov web site on what i'm allowed and it seems very confusing. My due date is 8th March, so i think i might just be eligible, but not sure where to go from here. As i don't have an employer, is it the government who would pay anything? Do i need to get a form from my doc (i'm seeing GP tomorrow for antenatal appointment). Do the job centre help you with these forms?

I feel pretty dumb today - i've been staring at the government web sites and NOTHING seems to be going into my brain!!!!!!!

You should be entitled to matenity allowance if you have worked 26 weeks in the 66 weeks before baby is due. You can claim from 29 weeks and its the job centre that deal with it I think

yes i am in the same position, if you worked 13 weeks in the last 66 weeks you can claim maternity allowance from your tax payments etc. Its £117 a week (which is the same as SMP i think) you get the form from the job centre. I have just filled mine out, i wasnt sure either but apparently i am entitled to it.

Oh excellent, I though i'd get nothing. Did you have to provide them with pay slips etc for the period? Better get organised and take a trip to the job centre tomorrow then...

just to add you need to have worked 26 weeks in yr 66 week period not 13

theconfusion with 13 weeks is because this yr test period to show yr income was sufficent to claim full benefit

you havce to provide at least 26 weeks worth of employment in the 66 weeks and then choose 13 weeks for them to test yr income..

also if yr signed off you should be entitled to incapacity benefit until 29 weeks then you switch to MA. I'm a homeowner and oh works but i still get IB as it is not means tested... you do need to have paid certain amount of ni though (if yr entitled to ma you sud get ib)

hope this helps and makes sense!!!!
