I'm just wondering if anyone knows........Can your midwife sign you off work of is it just your GP?

I've been off all this week and Dr told me to go back Monday (18th) to see how things are getting on with my back. I was thinking tho if I'm seeing my midwife (who is also at the drs surgery) can't I just save my time and the doctors by discussing my going back to work with my Midwife, if she thinks I should/shouldn't she can do the necessary?
