Castor oil... Would you???

Im 40+5 and having a home birth so cannot be induced at the hospital.

Had another sweep at the MW this morning and she said she gave it a good stretch and that hopefully it would work.

She then told us to go for a walk, have , eat a pineapple and curry and to have an eggcup full of castor oil mixed with orange juice.

I know there are lots of negative reports about castor oil and we have done all the others but im sat here with the castor oil really unsure, i know she is trying to get me going naturally because of the home birth and bless her she is being great and very supportive.

Just want some opinions/advice..... If you were me would you???

to all xx

I was sizing up the castor oil today at the drugstore but decided to put it down. I'm going to talk to my doctor and just get him to confirm that it won't hurt the baby before I take any (another week so if I don't go by then I might just be more willing to take it)

My mom said that they gave it to her in the hospital when she was pregnant with me before they put her on the drip and it was the most horrible thing she's ever experienced.

Id be really careful with it, I dont know for certain, but Ive head it can give you the runs and also increases the risk of the baby pooing inside you.

I dont know for definate but my MW told me not to when I was pregnant.

Maybe someone can confirm though?

I took it 3 times with Hebe and nothing happened. I think if you're trying to have your home birth I'd give an egg cup full a bash. It will only stir things up if you're 'ready' IYKWIM. Have the orange ready.....its greasy and nasty to swallow!!! Good luck

I considered this quite a few times but each time i chose not to do it. I thought id rather let nature take its course then mess with things and maybe cause difficulties. x

Its my understanding that the main issue with castor oil is that it will give you prtty bad diarrhea and so you'll quite possibly be dehydrated when you go into labour.

I would take it personally, because in my mind castor oil is a better option than if you need to be induced in hospital using artifical hormones - I'd just be careful not to over do it and drink plenty of water.
