Sciatica

Hiya everyone

I have had odd pains throughout my pregnancy and one pain which I was sure was sciatica down my left side of my back a few weeks ago but it wasn't too severe. I have woken up this morning though with a very sharp pain down the right side of my back... to the point where I can't stand on my right leg. I have managed to get into work, but the pain is so severe that I can't even get up from my desk has anyone else had this and is it sciatica? I tried to phone my midwife but she isn't in until tomorrow... and I don't want to phone delivery just for backache. Could it harm the baby though?

Thank you.

Yerp i have it hunni. I went to the doctor to have it confimred and he just said because of the extra weight the sciatic nerve can get trapped and cause alot of pain. It sounds to me like what your describing is the sciatic nerve but dont take my word for it, id go to the doc and get checked out. He cant do much and in the end mine got so bad he gave me co-codemol and signed me off college but apart from that there isnt much they can do. You just have to wait for baby to arrive im afraid. Big hugs, its pain full i know hunni, and if it realy is too painful they will sign you off work because it isnt fair on you.

Sitting down for long periods of time does make it worse as well, so try to avoid that, and i know it hurts but try getting up and walking around every now and then that can help aswell.
xx

Sounds like it. I had this very early on from about 8 - 14 weeks and it was absolute agony!!! I couldn't barely move without OH helping me and its starting to come back again now. I agree with Aidan's Mummy get it checked out just to be sure and hopefully the dr will be able to give you some advice.

I've had it really bed too. My GP diagnosed sciatica a few weeks ago and I'm having physio now which has helped a bit. I had to use crutches a a few weeks ago too, but the pain has eased a lot now, so I can finally get dressed on my own now!

It doesn't affect the baby, but the extra weight on the sciatic nerve can make it excruciating. Hope you feel better soon though.x.

Thanks everyone... I have phoned the Delivery Suite as well to speak to the m/w there and she said the same thing. She told me to take a couple of days off work and try to rest - but to also try and walk around when possible so my muscle doesn't sieze up so I am going to get as much work done today as possible and see how I am in the morning. She said as long as I am feeling 10 kicks per day before 7pm - the baby should be fine, but if I don't I have to go in to be monitored.

He's kicked 3 times so far - so we will probably be fine. I am just not used to getting even mild backache so this is quite scary... and extremely painful

Ahh not long to go.

Thank you again
