HI hunn,

if you are not dilated at all they may put a gel pessary up to to start the softening of your cervix they can give you these six hours apart i usually started with the 2nd lot, as well as the drip to get your contractions goin, the only thing i can say as ive had 2 inductions and 2 normal births is that tne pains when they do start are a lot more intense as its assisted rather than in its own time and can be quite quick, other than that no difference hunn, hope all goes well and good luck for friday

I agree with previous, if your cervix is still shut, they will likely use the gel first.

When I was induced nearly 4 years ago, it worked like this:

They gave you the gel every six hours until it kicks off. For half an hour after the gel, they monitored me on the ctg to check for contractions and to watch babies HB. I was given gel at 6pm, and again at midnight. My labour started sometime in the middle of the night then. I was brought to delivery suite at 8am, when I also phoned dh to come back, I was 4cm.

Bounced on the ball intil 9am when I was fully dilated, and I got up to push.

So it all happened quick enough, it doesn't have to be a nightmare!

Oh the best tip I can give you is, when you start to feel the pains, walk!!! I walked up and down the corridor from the first contraction, and it really helped!!

Oh, and I didn't have the drip at all. I am not worried at all about having another induction, if I need it this time, thats fine.

Good luck

Nicola xxxx

This is how it went for me - my waters hadnt gone and I was 10 days over.

At about 7pm they put the gel/pessaries in and I had to lay down for half an hour. At about 10pm I got some period type pains and the MW gave me a sleeping tablet to see if I could settle. About 11pm I was still awake and the pains were getting worse but still bearable. My waters started to go and then totally went - woosh!!! Then the contractions just kicked in!! They were pretty intense and I tried gas and air but it made me sick so I asked for an epi. I actually sussed the gas and air shortly after that and the contractions settled into a more 'normal' and managable pattern. They still gave me the epi which with hind-sight I wish they hadnt because I was doing fine with the gas and air. After that I was in bed with the epi and it took a long time to get anywhere and I got tired. Eventually at 3.58pm the next day she was born with the help of forceps.

My advice to you would be dont panic if it seems to be very intense to start with - I just thought with it being my first, if this is what its like now and it has to get worse, I wont cope - but thats not how it was. Epidurals are a wonderful help but in my experience make for a much longer labour as you're not mobile. 16hrs for me and I think it could have been a lot less.

Good luck hun - cant wait to hear all about it!!!
