It's pretty much standard in the US so I dont know why it's not here.
It's quite common to carry it and it's so very easily treatable. The anti biotics eliminate any risk of passing it to baby during labour.

I asked my MW about it and she said that my NHS trust had just started to offer it as an additional private service. So she ordered the kit and I took the swabs. I paid £20 and they turned it around in 1 working day.

If you want it and your hospital dont offer the service then you can get a free kit here: http://www.mumstuff.co.uk/acatalog/G...-Test-Kit.html
and you only get charged if you send it off for analysis.
