If kitty is given his own space and lots of kindness, he will be just fine.
I know it's a tough time to be welcoming him in, but cats are very adaptable.
Sounds like a great solution to the mouse problem, too.
We did the same thing when mice moved in to our drafty old house (not 1780s, more like 1930s! )
Good luck with puss!

mouse traps or mouse poison are properly your best bet.
but good luck if you do get a cat.
my cats bring mice, birds and all sorts in the house and the door step not a pretty sight!!
you will more then likely regret it x

Last year we had mice in this building, it's an old house converted into flats. They were pretty bad in the downstairs flat, but I only ever saw a small amount of poo in my flat. However, I saw one run across my kitchen once and that was enough for me, thankyou very much! Went out and got a rescue cat from the Cat's protection league, Tom, who is used to being an indoor cat. (I live in a 1st floor flat near a busy road).
He is great, and luckily seems to be a good mouser, as I have never seen any trace of mice since I got him. Also, because he is quite content to stay indoors (he never tries to go out even if I leave all windows and door open), there's no risk of him bringing any vermin indoors.
I would never live without a cat again, as mice are the one thing I cannot stand the thought of sharing my home with.
xx

Can you not ring the council and speak to pest control? Surely they can sort this problem for you? But yeah, get a cat, i love cats.
