TENs machine

Hi all,

I've got a tens machine which I'm planning to use during labour.

However, I've got real bad lower back pain and was wondering whether its safe to use before labour. I'm 38 weeks gone.

Any advice?

Hi hun, yes you are safe to use a tens, as long as a person is over 3 months pregnant then it is safe, i to suffer with a bad back and asked my mw and she told me as long as i'm past 3 months.
Hope this helps

I believe once you are past 12 weeks it is fine to use.

I was talking to my mw on Thursday about getting one, would be interested in your opinion of how you found it if you don't mind dropping me a line once you've had a go.

I've just used it and I found it helped after a couple of minutes!! I was taking paracetamol and was given painkillers and had been taking these since Sunday. I think it's a great alternative to these as it's drug free.

The only thing is, is that I'm not sure how long to keep the machine on for during one session.

But after one go WOW I can feel the difference and the pain has subsided!!!

i think they are safe to use yes but just a little word of advice from me lol They say as soon as u feel back pain or when your in early labour to put it on as its best in early labour. However i didnt put mine on til i was 6cm dilated and found it worked miraculously and because i wasnt using it for the little itty bitty contractions or pains and was using it for the bigger ones i was able to use it longer as the effects didnt wear off and my body get too used to the pain so to speak and i managed my whole labour on just the tens and a tiny bit of gas and air. I think what happens it people put it on early and are like yay its working i dont feel nothing but thats only when the contractions are weak and not too strong then as they get more frequent and intense and tens doesnt work as well cause you are used to the buzz from the machines then ull go on to use other pain relief. I personally feel thats why theres such a mixed response about tens in labour because for some who put it on early it wont help when the pain is sooo intense but then theres the other people who put it on a bit later and it works wonders!!! I rememer when i was in labour i was using it right until my son came out, so there he is lay on my tummy and all of a sudden the tens lets of a pulse omg it was agony i was wiggling around saying argh get it off get it off lol it was sooo funny u dont realise how strong they are until u have a pulse without being in labour lol.

Sorry its long and babbly its just i really believe it depends on when u put it on and use it to whether itll help or not and think because they tell u to put it on sooner rather than later it ruins its chances or working proper however this is just my opinion and from my own experience so i guess we are all different lol. Good luck xxx

My midwife told us to use it when ever you have a sore back, and if we wanted to use it during labour then def use it before hand

Quite lucky actually as my mum has one to help with her arthritis so I've just pinched hers for a few weeks. I'm using it now. It's great!!
