It depends entirely on the individual!

There are lots of threads about this in the breastfeeding/bottlefeeding section.

Some people start expressing right away and are successful, some wait for awhile. Some arn't successful at expressing at all.

Some people have been able to express prior to even giving birth too. Which is nice for them because then they have something to bring to the hospital with them.

People here pump early and nothing bad happens to us or the milk supply... lol... so I dont know what that is all about in the UK, you guys seem to have pretty strict rules over there..

I think its more about confusing baby with bottle one min and then breast the next!! I think!! Some women struggle to get baby to enjoy bottle after breast so its better to exclusively do one or the other!!

The milk just wouldnt come out i tried hand expressing and pump expressing i went to a breastfeeding group for some advice she tried to do it for me (felt a tad like a milking cow lol) and she couldnt do it either. Benn was more than capable of feeding from the though and i successfully breastfed until he was 10 months old i would have done it longer but it felt weird him pulling at my top lol. But after 8 weeks i could hand express or pump express although i did find it a pain in the arse. I intend to give a bottle of expressed milk or even formula milk earlier on this time cus i couldnt get Benn to take a bottle and he hated all formula milks so i ended up being tied to him which id rather avoid this time.

I really dont know what I would do if I couldnt express! I think I would switch to formula!! Its the whole doing it in public thing for me! And as selfish as it may sound I dont want to feel so tied down its going to get me down!! Like i wouldnt be able to do much at all... no gym!! no helping my mum out at her work!! no nights out!!

I think it would make me unhappy!
