Anaemia anyone??

I have been diagnosed with anaemia and my GP has prescribed 400mg iron a day.

Has anyone else got this, or does anyone else know about it?

I've been feeling a bit dizzy and stuff but nothing terrible. 400mg seems an awaful lot of iron to me?? My GP said it might upset my bowel which is not good as I can get really painful IBS.

I'm wondering about just taking a half dose - it this a good idea? Or I should just add more fibre to my diet?

Also, will my baby get anaemic? He seems to be as active as usual at the moment.

Thanks ladies - sorry to be a worrier.

I think the baby takes all the iron it needs from you which is why a lot of pregnant ladies get anaemia in the first place. I wouldn't worry about it, it's quite common but you should really take the dose your GP has reccommended. He knows what he's doing!

Hiya hun, As you have IBS you can ask that you have the iron as an injection into the top of your bum, it's completly painless and has no side affects on your bowel. I have Crohn's Disease and had these they didn't effect my stomach at all, but the tablets did.

Baby will not be Anaemic as Blah11 said baby takes everything from you, which is why you are.

A great tip for getting more iron into your bloodstream, is to eat red meat and drink a glass of fresh orange juice, The vitimin C helps with the absorbtion of iron.

I hope this helps you hun

Thanks - that sounds helpful. If I start to feel poorly on the tablets I'll defo ask my GP about that then. Thanks hun!

Anemia is quite common in the beginning part of third trimester, and it can affect both you and your baby. I'd definately look into the injections if I were you

My midwife has put me on iron tablets, I think they are roughly the same dosage as yours. She hasn't actually said I've got anemia just said my levels have gone from 13 to 10.something and now and 9.9 so stuck me on the pills.

I've not had any problems with them so far but I have also started taking natural senna to counteract any other issues.

xx

Good idea Moulder. I bought some dried dates today and also have some of those fruity senna drink sachets so might try those if I have any problems.

if the doctor has told you to take 400 then i would take 400. I have been on iron tablets since 28wks they did initially give me an upset stomach but that soon settled
