Do UK mums have a legal right to BF in public?

I just ask this as i was reading "What to Expect the First Year" and it said there was no actual law enabling women in the UK to breastfeed in public. I thought there was though, i don't know if a law was passed since the book was published. If not does this mean that we could be breastfeeding in public and get told not to?
x

there should be legal rights, because it would make many women feel a lot more comfortable. xx

I'm sure I heard of an 'act' a few weeks back stating that mothers have the right to bf in public. I can't remember what it was called tho.
I think it is outrageous that there would ever be an instance where it is deemed inappropriate to naturally feed a baby! Grr it makes me actually cross! We (inc our children) are subjected to almost indecent half naked pictures in the media on a daily basis, yet ppl get fussy at the thought of glimpsing a bit of 'side boob'. I'm half darin someone to pull me bf in public jus so i can vent my anger at all the closwd minded ppl in the world! Lol. Did i Jus rant there? i think i did didnt i! apologies!

Eeek i thought it was a legal right of ours already. I'm a bit shy about bf'ing in public anyway and would be absolutely mortified if someone asked me to stop and move on! x

I think it was against the law a few years ago but then that got axed but it became a taboo to breast feed outside. Then women started standing up for themselves started doing it again, as it stands at the moment I believe you can't tell a woman to stop feeding her child in public but I think resaturant/ pub owners etc can ask you to move.

From the 1st October 2010 there will indeed be new legislation to protect breastfeeding mums, amongst other things.. It's called The Equality Act

"UK mothers who breastfeed their children, are celebrating after the government clarified today that mothers are, and always have been, free to breastfeed in public places. Breastfeeding mothers are also protected in law under the provision of goods, services and facilities section of the Sexual Discrimination Act when breastfeeding, whatever the age of the baby, in places such as cafes, restaurants, libraries, surgeries etc."
