How painful is natural birth?

I'm planning for natural birth with no pain relief. Anyone ever experienced this ? It's my first baby. it's the most important moment in my life, so i want it all natural. My mom gave birth to my brother of 4.8 kg. with no pain relief Ouch!! Just wonder what it's like

If you're more relaxed and in tune with your body then it will be able to function to how it's supposed to and hurt less. Thats not to say that it may not hurt, but it'll hurt less than if you are all tensed and working against your body.

i'm hoping for the same, natural birth. Not totally objecting to pain relief, would like some if i can't cope with it but would prefer nothing if i can.

I had my first with no drugs of any kind and hope to do the same with this one. Honestly, I know it hurt but the memory of it literally faded away as soon as I had her. I don't know where all the time went. My mind just kind of blanked out. The best thing is to try to relax and keep reminding yourself that it will come to an end and you will have a beautiful baby. You might want to bring an ultrasound picture to focus on during contractions. Your body knows what to do. Just trust yourself, focus on the end result and don't forget to breathe. It will be over before you know it and you will feel more empowered than you have ever- or will ever- felt. It's an amazing experience!

I had pethedine during my contractions, but it only lasted about an hour before it wore off. I tried gas and air when I was pushing but it kept sending me to sleep so I pretty much did it (or at least the difficult bit!) without pain releif.

I have to say though, I didn't think it was half as painful as what Id ben told. It was manageable. The pushing stage I didn't think was that painful at all, but it just feels really horrible because you feel like you're going to do a poo. Its more of an uncomfortable feeling than a painful one I thought.

If you don't want drugs then don't have them, we were made to cope with childbirth without!

I want a naural childbirth aswell {well as natural as gas and air is} although i'm not ruling anything out until on the day as until it happens i won't know how i'm gonna cope, i like the idea of not screaming and making loads of noise aswell because when i think that my LO can hear everything it kinda freaks me out that he/she will be all confused andupset if i'm screaming like a nutter but hey that's me saying this now i'll probably be the biggest screamer ever begging for an Epidural!

I'd love to be able to cope with just gas and air and am gonna learn as much about breathing/hypno as I can. I'm not gonna pressurise myself though - if I need more pain relief I will ask for it.

I just had gas and air which doesn't take away the pain but makes you feel drunk. I gave up on it though for pushing.

TBH I don't think you can really say how painful it is because it's probably different for everyone but i agree if you're relaxed it's much easier.

I found it very painful but I could have done it without gas and air if I hadn't been in labour for so long. It's just it had been going on for 5 days for me & I was struggling to cope by the last day. If I did it again I'd do it without gas and air unless there was a problem. I'd be much more open minded next time I think.
