I had this quite badly 3 - 4 weeks ago and got really bad pains with it too.

The midwife told me to make sure I was drinking loads of water and eating plenty of high fibre food, like wholegrain bread & brown rice. I prefered shreddies or shreaded wheat which are also quite good but taste nicer. Sprinkle the cereal with raisens for an added dose of fibre and hopefully it will help, it did for me.

Milk of magnesia is safe to take and works too. You have to take a high dose of it but the instructions are on the bottle. It can still take a day or more before anything happens though. If it hasn't worked in 24 hours then you can repeat the dose.

its totally safe to take fibresure and other fibre supplements when pregnant, you can get it in boots and most supermarkets and its just a white flavourless powder you can add to your drink or any food. And its great because really helps with constipation xx

i drink about 3 litres of water a day and i have some fibre, like bran flakes.

would the midwife prescribe something for it, as i dont want to be spending money when i can it for free.

am i drinking enough water?

I've been taking a fiber supplement and stool softeners pretty regularly and it works for the most part. I also try to get in 4 liters a day. It can't hurt to get in more water. Hope you feel better soon!

i went through a really bad spell of constipation and it was awful. i have started eating prunes (don't like them but they do make you poo!). What about Kiwi fruits? they are good for constipation too as i read they contain a natural laxative ingredient.
