I am a complete credit card tart according to moneysavingexpert.com But, it has helped me to pay off my credit card debts sooner. | From what I understand with natwest as it is a graduate account it wont be loads of interest!! I will find out more soon but yeh there is a possibilty I could pay the £1600 with my natwest credit card which is new and has 0% and a credit limit of over £4,000!! So I have some left!! However would it not be classed as cash advance therefore hit with loads more charges!!
I really feel for you with your debts... Im glad I owe family for the majority as it is interest free My nan I owe about £4,000 possibly more... and OH's mum we owe £6,500 for a car we bought last year!! |

I'm Currently Feeling: | This is a serious debt you have going there, and it doesnt look very manageable to me at all. I dont think you can realistically pay these off at all, as the interest and charges are going to make the amount go up and up. I think now is the time to admit defeat and go and seek profesional help. Have you looked into IVA's (individual voluntary arrangements)? These are were someone manages your debts for you and arranges settlements for you (saving you money), allowing you to pay a reduced rate and pay things of within a reasonable time.
Very soon, you wont be able to transfer your credit card debt and the interest will start racking up and your only option will be bancruptcy, ruining your chances of getting a bigger property for a good few years.
First thing's first. Stop stressing right now. There is nothing you can do. Work out how much money you need to survive and for the baby and what you have coming in. Make a list of everyone you owe money to and take it to the citizen's advice bureau, who will point you in the right direction. Do it asap, as i know what it is like to lay in bed at night worrying about it. |

I'm Currently Feeling: | sleep and money, I feel you. I haven't moved into my fiancé's place yet so I've been living with my parents, who love me but don't like that I'm pregnant. They want me to be even more productive then I alleardy am so they've been making me get up early every morning. I wouldn't mind, if I could fall asleep earlier, or if I wasn't so tired all the time. I want to get as much sleep as possible before my LO arrives! |

Do it asap, as i know what it is like to lay in bed at night worrying about it. | The £15000 here in the UK I am managing just fine and within 2.5 years they will be gone. In fact, I have excellent credit, just a lot of debt. If I did not have these student loans all would be well. As said, I just paid off a £3500 overdraft and am paying off a credit card in 2 months. I have not used my credit cards for any purchases for years. I just use them to swap for 0% interest rates.
It just angers me that my ex makes £60,000 a year and I was the one who had to pay for the divorce and consent order. My lawyer advised the settlement he gave me was fair, but it was not enough to pay for the fees to buy my modest place, pay off the car, my small (at the time) credit card bill, down payment and to furnish a whole place with just the basics. And I was paying £250 a month towards my student loans. And then my boiler in the new place broke down, my car cost me a fortune in repairs last year, the plumbing and electricity went as well as the locks on the door (disintegrated!). That is where my debt comes from.
I am already in default in the U.S. with no chance to rehab my loans as I did it once already and since it was in rehab I could not ask for a deferment on my payments due to financial problems (like having a baby). And the money I paid each month only went to interest! And they are so draconian that interest just racks up and up as well as late fees and extortionate "collection" fees and interest on top of that, as well. Forget about asking them to freeze interest. I was paying money into a black hole when I could use it to pay off stuff here as I was only paying off interest on it. So, I was stuck in a terrible situation as I cannot pay the whole amount up front, as they will demand.
I am just waiting for them to sell it to a credit agency here in the U.K., which should take time as the last time after 9 months they thought I returned to the U.S. of which I have no inclination to do.
And I will not enter into an IVA when I can deal with the loans here because it will affect my credit rating, which I need at this point in time. I think I may have more rights here than there. Either way, I will pay them off once I am able to. I do not like to be in debt and to have this amount of money I owe makes me cringe. But, I have taken the best steps I can to sort it out and have been doing so for the last two years.
OH and I will be going to the CAB for advice during the week. However, I know there are no negotiations with U.S. student loan companies as the government has given them powers that would make loan sharks and mobsters envious.
Thanks for the advice, though. | | | | Status: Offline

I'm Currently Feeling: | Sounds awful!! I do know nothing about US money law, sounds nasty!
It is so crap! I am in a similar situation. Sounds like your lawyer needs shooting making you settle for a lower amount than you needed, but then I am just about to do the same with my husband because i just want it over with.
I have been shuffling creditcards for years and missed a balance of £3.00 on one (i moved and they didnt change my address), which accumulated charges of £300 in default! I paid them off but my credit rating got stung and now I am stuck as no one will give me another credit card so i am paying a 20% interest rate and cant do a transfer.
Stupid stupid money worries. I feel for you. |
