Question

Is 3lb 9oz heavy for 29 wks?

Hi all,

At my scan yesterday one of the ladies let out a big 'oh' when she read the weight of the baby at our scan (how do you tell the weight from a scan anyway?), when I said why is that too big or small, she mumble she thought it was big and then glossed over it.

Now I have no idea about weights etc, but if I've got 11 wks to go - is he already big for his age.

I'm having visions of giving birth to a 12lb melon! Yikes!

ETA: looking at my ticker it says 'nearly 3 whole pounds' - so I'm guessing he is big for his age then?

they get in the measurements like head circumference... crown-rump length.... and make an estimate on that!!!

he could just have had a little growth spurt!!! I bet if you read another week by week book it would say different!! All my books say different!! Was you referred for a growth scan then hun??

No this was a private 4d scan, that I paid for, not NHS.

I had a scan at 30 weeks (which I know is a bit after you) and was told he was 3lbs 11oz, and had a further scan at 34 weeks and he was 6lbs 2oz which they say is slightly ahead of normal (maybe 10days) but no real problem. Plus also they explained that it is a guess and can be wrong by up to 14% either way. Are the midwives measuring your bump? Do they have any concerns?

Thanks guys,

Yes midwife says he is measuring fine, 29cm this week - so no concerns in that way.

I guess I was momentarily alarmed at nothing then - it was just this ditzy woman at the scan place that made me worry with her big 'oh' !
