I was reading my pregnancy book last night and it said that at 39 weeks in first pregnancies if the baby's head is still not engaged (and they class engaged as 2/5ths or more) then your MW should refer you for a scan to make sure there is nothing obstructing the baby getting in there and that your pelvis is the right size. I've never heard this before, but this book has been like my bible since I got pregnant, it's brilliant.

The thing is, Im due on Monday, and his head is still only 4/5ths engaged. My bump is still really high and I don't know whether it's worth making an appointment to get checked over because I have one on Thursday (40 wks + 3)
I'm also in the worst pain EVER in my pelvis... it's been quite bad since about 30 weeks when they said I had SPD, but the past week it's been really really bad. Its never just down one side anymore like it used to be, it's right down the middle and down both sides and I don't know if this has anything to do with it?

Any ideas?

I'm still only a little engaged too Linzi around 3/5... doc doesn't seem that worried.

I'd ask your midwife, but I'd also trust her answer... she knows your pregnancy

If you are still concerned, you can sure ask for a second opinion right?

I was just concerned because I didn't see my regular MW last time and she didn't seem to really know a lot about what she was doing.

If you're at all worried then I'd ask for another appointment, if nothing else it will put your mind at rest and stop you worrying, and if you're in that sort of pain the last thing you need is stress to add to it and make you feel even worse.

try not to worry linzi. My appointment yesterday she tald me that head was "well engaged",but didnt give me an indication of the old measurements out of 5 etc. Everyone is different and im sure if it was a problem then they would have referred you.

Ring your midwife and ask her, no harm in that. Just tell her the pain you've been having, it may be that the extra pain is due to LO trying to engage. xx

I was never scanned when I had my son and he was basically no where when I went into labour. It's maybe changed since you had your last check, things can change quickly. I'm sure all is fine hun xx

I haven't been told whether I'm engaged at all although midwife always says the head is down and in my notes it says 'long ceph free' as babys position. Does that mean I'm not engaged or has she just not said?

I just got back from my 0 week appt & my doc also said that the head is engaged!
I checked my notes now & it says 4/5!!!!! Is this good/bad???
