Is my anxiety mental or physical?

Hello there,

I'm 31 weeks pregnant with may many pregnancy related problems

The main one is the feeling of anxiety

99% of the time i only get it when it's dark, so usually when i'm in bed.

I don't have any personal problems/issues so i've nothing to worry about so i don't know why i feel like this. The feeling i get usually is waking up and feeling like i can't breath. Although i am taking breaths ot feels like no air is going in and im going to suffocate.

I also feel like i've got something really heavy on my chest which stops me from taking really deapth breaths...when i get this feeling i have to get out of bed and pace up & down the room...

Last time this happened it was soo bad that i didn't go to sleep all night, i couldn't even lay down or even sit on my bed, i had to pace up and down the room, walk up and down the stairs all night. I though it'd get better when it got light but it didnt't....i had the same feeling - and butterflies in my stomach and i coulndt stop crying all day....I also had a feeling of sickness...and had diarreah...

It's not as bad now but i still can't get to sleep until it starts getting light at 4.30am-5amish...and i can sleep untill about 8am

When i get this feeling i start thinking of the fact that i still have 2 more months left and i wont be able to handle this for another 2 months which makes it worse...

I have never had this feeling before, exept in my 1st pregnancy...

Is this a mental thing or physical? the nurse seems to think it's mental because im just worrying about things...but i dont agree

I do get palpitation type feelings sometimes and I feel dizzy/shaky and cant get my breath. I try lying on my left side when it comes on, thats meant to be better for circulation. I hope things get better for you. xxx

Anxiety like you're experiencing is both mental and physical. The two go hand in hand. I suffer from terrible anxiety and these are a few things that work.. chocolate is one of them! The most effective is to regulate your breathing. Try breathing in through your nose for a swift count of 7 (not seconds) and out through your mouth for a count of 11. Do this for a while and you should feel much better. I know how scary it can be but I promise there are ways around it and it doesn't have to carry on for the rest of the pregnancy. Feel free to pm if you do want any advice x

i tried chocolate but it gives me terrible heartburn...

there was a stage where i wouldn't eat anything because i thought the food would stop me from breathing in air...

I have tried the breathing techniques and it works sometimes, but at times when the anxiety is just too bad, nothing helps and i end up running around like a headless chicken crying my eyes out

your pregnancy hormones causes anxiety. its very normal. for the shortness of breath, try lying on your side most times it helps. also when i do strenous work like overworking myself i have that too. just try and sit up when you have it, relax and think of something that soothes you and visualise it and savour it , that also helps
pregnancy also causes shortness of breath when your blood vessel expand and more oxygenated blood has to be pumped at a particular time to accommodate it, that also causes shortness of breath and fatigue.
i believe if there was anything out of order your nurse would have let you know. lots of hugs

There is something else called the Point of Exit Method which works for me, but it takes a while to get your head round it (you can read about it here http://www.saneadvice.com/point-of-e...y-poem-system/)

I also find going outside helps. Unfortunately there is no definite method that will help, but you will find something that works for you x
