C-section questions

Hey all

I haven't been on in a while , lost my password for here

I'M now at 39 weeks pregnant , having a sweet lil boy !

At my 34 weeks ultrasound we saw that the baby had moved but not into the right position he's now in breech and my doctor asked me right away if I wanted to attempt to move him externally ..now I belive thats too dangerous so hes been like that for a while now

Long story short we decided a c-section would be the best option ,but when i heard those words I got real scared , never had any operation what so ever so I have a few questions to ask !

1) On a scale of 1-10 what pain should " look forward" to feeling lol

2) Can I walk around and pick up my baby once im home ?

3) will they leave my baby with me in my room at the hospital ?

4) will i be able to breast feed?

5) can my husband be in the OR with me ?

Sorry for all these questions im so new to this and my c-section date is may 17th !!!

thank you

Sorry to hear you have to have c-sec. I did with my first because he was breech, and it stunk. But he and I both came through okay, and that's what's important. Here are my responses to your questions:

1) I would say a 7-8 for pain. I've been told the pain is not as bad if you did not labor first, which I didn't. I didn't even take pain meds for the first few days because I was bfing. And when I did take them, I only took one at night to help sleep and did that for a few days. Don't get me wrong, I hurt. But I was so paranoid about taking meds with bfing, that I stuck it out...and it was manageable.

2) Yes and no. You can walk around and pick up your baby if you are already standing up. But do not try to bend to pick him up for at least 4-5 days. If you really have to do it, pick him up, hold him VERY close to your body, and then stand. Don't try to hold him away from you and stand. Our first night home I gave my son a bath in the tub, and when I went to stand up with him from the tub, I fell down in pain and almost dropped him. Ended up having to scream bloody murder for my hubby.

3) Every hospital is different- so talk to yours. My son was with us in the room the whole time.

4) ABSOLUTELY!! C-sec babies can be more lethargic, so they may be slow to start. But I put my son up to nurse while we were still in recovery and he started right away. Just don't be alarmed if yours is more interested in sleeping than eating. Keep trying until he wakes up. BFing with a c-sec is even more important in terms of helping your uterus contract and keep that wound from bleeding.

5) Again, every hospital is different. My hubby had to stand outside while they preped me, but then he was there from the moment they made the first cut until we went to recovery. And I would recommend, if the hospital allows it, for him to be there. You are kind of unable to really do anything, so it's good for him to get to see what is going on and keep track of how baby is doing.

Unsolicited advice: The first moment you can- WALK!!!! I had a friend give me this advice, and it was a gem. It hurt, but I started walking within hours of my surgery. The friend, who is a labor and delivery nurse said the women who do not get up and walk as soon as possible have greater complications with their wound, bleeding, and being able to get around once they get home. At first, I only walked to the door of my room and back to the bed. But by the next morning I forced myself to walk up and down the hallway. When you go home, you will appreciate putting yourself through the discomfort. Another tidbit, with a c-sec you are in the hospital a little longer. I am not typically sensitive to detergents/bleach, etc. But by my second day in hospital, I was itching like crazy. I had to send my hubby home to get sheets and that fixed it. I don't know if my skin was more sensitive as a reaction to the c-sec drugs or if it was being there so long or what, but you might want to think about throwing a fitted sheet and regular sheet in your hospital bag just in case.

Hope that helps...and don't worry...you will be fine

1) On a scale of 1-10 what pain should " look forward" to feeling lol With my first I went through two days of hell first, so the pain was an 9 for me. With my second, it was planned and it was around a 6 for me.

2) Can I walk around and pick up my baby once im home ? I did with both, but was way easier with my second. With my second, my daughter was 18 months and I was carrying her as she was sick as well.

3) will they leave my baby with me in my room at the hospital ? They did with mine. If you need a rest they told me they could take them for awhile but I never felt comfortable with that.

4) will i be able to breast feed? Yes.

5) can my husband be in the OR with me ? Yes.

The pain was pretty bad at first. 7-8 probably. But with pain meds, its not bad. Just make sure the nurses are bringing them consistently.

2) Can I walk around and pick up my baby once im home ?

You can walk around when you are still in the hospital. The sooner you are up walking, the quicker your recovery will be. I was told not to carry anything heavier than my baby, so I couldn't pick her up in her car seat. Just the baby.

3) will they leave my baby with me in my room at the hospital ?

Hospitals are probably all different, but my daughter stayed in my room the entire time, except for the newborn hearing screen and her first bath.

4) will i be able to breast feed?

Yes. If you plan on breastfeeding, try to do it right away after surgery if you can. The sooner you do it, the quicker you start bonding IMO. Also, Erica was awake for the first few hours, then slept for almost 24 hours, with us having to wake her up to feed her.

5) can my husband be in the OR with me ?

This is up to the anesthesiologist, but here they let husbands. They let my husband and my mom come in with me.

I also agree, even tho you are really really not going to want to get up and move, do it as soon as you can. It will speed things up so much. Expect that the first couple of days in the hospital, your husband is going to have to primarily take care of LO. That was one hard thing for me, since I just wanted to take care of my daughter. If you have any other questions feel free to PM me. I just had my section 6 weeks ago tomorrow.

Hi there, I had two c-sections and they were both totally different, I know you will be aprehensive but just try and relax and enjoy it. Just one thing though - don't be alarmed by the number of people in the OR! As a few others have said, its best to get moving asap, but listen to your body and don't try to do too much.

Good luck and I look forward to hearing your birth story and seeing the pictures of your little boy x
