Sorry to hear you have to have c-sec. I did with my first because he was breech, and it stunk. But he and I both came through okay, and that's what's important. Here are my responses to your questions:
1) I would say a 7-8 for pain. I've been told the pain is not as bad if you did not labor first, which I didn't. I didn't even take pain meds for the first few days because I was bfing. And when I did take them, I only took one at night to help sleep and did that for a few days. Don't get me wrong, I hurt. But I was so paranoid about taking meds with bfing, that I stuck it out...and it was manageable.
2) Yes and no. You can walk around and pick up your baby if you are already standing up. But do not try to bend to pick him up for at least 4-5 days. If you really have to do it, pick him up, hold him VERY close to your body, and then stand. Don't try to hold him away from you and stand. Our first night home I gave my son a bath in the tub, and when I went to stand up with him from the tub, I fell down in pain and almost dropped him. Ended up having to scream bloody murder for my hubby.
3) Every hospital is different- so talk to yours. My son was with us in the room the whole time.
4) ABSOLUTELY!! C-sec babies can be more lethargic, so they may be slow to start. But I put my son up to nurse while we were still in recovery and he started right away. Just don't be alarmed if yours is more interested in sleeping than eating. Keep trying until he wakes up. BFing with a c-sec is even more important in terms of helping your uterus contract and keep that wound from bleeding.
5) Again, every hospital is different. My hubby had to stand outside while they preped me, but then he was there from the moment they made the first cut until we went to recovery. And I would recommend, if the hospital allows it, for him to be there. You are kind of unable to really do anything, so it's good for him to get to see what is going on and keep track of how baby is doing.
Unsolicited advice: The first moment you can- WALK!!!! I had a friend give me this advice, and it was a gem. It hurt, but I started walking within hours of my surgery. The friend, who is a labor and delivery nurse said the women who do not get up and walk as soon as possible have greater complications with their wound, bleeding, and being able to get around once they get home. At first, I only walked to the door of my room and back to the bed. But by the next morning I forced myself to walk up and down the hallway. When you go home, you will appreciate putting yourself through the discomfort. Another tidbit, with a c-sec you are in the hospital a little longer. I am not typically sensitive to detergents/bleach, etc. But by my second day in hospital, I was itching like crazy. I had to send my hubby home to get sheets and that fixed it. I don't know if my skin was more sensitive as a reaction to the c-sec drugs or if it was being there so long or what, but you might want to think about throwing a fitted sheet and regular sheet in your hospital bag just in case.
Hope that helps...and don't worry...you will be fine
