The erythromycin/silver nitrate is to prevent possible chlamycia/gonorrhea conjunctivitis (which can lead to blindness)

THe Vitamin K is b/c the baby's liver doesnt quite figure out its job for a couple of days (also why they get jaundice) and the vitamin K is needed to make clotting factors. Without vitamin K, the babies run a risk of bleeding very easily for the 1st-2nd week of life (can include things like brain bleeds).

Im getting erythromycin and the shot but not for a couple of hours after birth.

I think the difference between the injection and the pill is the dosage - the injection uses a much higher dosage, where as you have to give the baby a regular dose of VitK. The risk with the injection is that the high dose may cause (i think i remember correctly) autism?

I am not sure I will get a choice with Tom being rushing into surgery - they may inject him to help him clot. Otherwise i would go for the pill as the little thing has so many brain risk factors already.

isnt it childhood leukaemia, not autism?...
