I take an iron tablet called Ferri-med. Its the only one I've tried so far that doesn't make me constipated and it actually works very well.

Don't know if you can get it in the UK though.

I'm Currently Feeling:

I had my bloods taken at my 28 week appointment and the Dr rang me the next day to say that I was anemic and I had to go and pick up a prescription for some iron tablets. I've been prescribed Ferrous Fumarate and I have to take one 3 times a day.

When I had my son I was anemic and I lost a lot of blood when I delivered so I had to have a blood transfusion which wasn't very pleasant as it meant a 5 day stay in hospital after the birth and I've never felt so run down in my life.

I really don't want to end up in that situation again so I've started taking my iron tablets but not the full 3 tablets a day as I really don't want to make myself consipated, I've been trying to eat more iron rich food to make up for the tablets I'm not taking.

The thing is I've been feeling really out of breath and quite dizzy even when sitting down. After I've eaten something my heart starts pounding in my chest and even when just going upstairs I feel physically exhausted. Could this be down to anemia? I have another appointment with my MW next Tuesday so I'll mention it to her then but it's just a right pain in the bum getting so exhausted from just climbing the stairs. My blood pressure at my last MW appointment was 102/52 so nothing wrong there.

I guess I'll just have to eat more spinach lol

I'm only slightly anemic so I'm not sure......but I've never had any problems with dizziness or breathlessness, yes I do get tired from walking up and down stairs but I'm 33 weeks pregnant so I kind of expect that. I would go ahead and talk to your MW about it

Will do at my next appointment

I'm normally really active and I was bang into the gym before I got pregnant, sorry to say that I haven't stepped foot inside the gym since I found out as I was scared that exercising would be harmful so I cut it out completely. Silly me, as now I can't even take the dog for a walk without feeling like I've ran a marathon. That from someone who used to run for 45mins on a treadmill none stop and still have enough puff left to do another 30mins of cardio.

I'm sure it's nothing to worry about though

I've noticed the black poo thing already, not very nice at all I've also noticed that I feel very sick after I've taken them, which can last for a while, I do tend to take them with food but it doesn't seem to make any difference to be honest. The Dr said that if they gave me an upset tummy I should go back and he would put me on some different ones so I'll mention it at my next MW appointment.

They haven't actually made me constipated, if anything they seem to have had the opposite effect, sorry, TMI

Hiya
Sorry to hear you are feeling under the weather

I was also told that i have very low iron levels on my 28 week bloods ,
and was given Pregaday. I have been on them for 3 weeks now at first they gave me terrible tummyache and the opposite to constipation , but the past week i have noticed a big improvement , i dont feel sick or have tummyache with them, and i feel a little more with it now which is nice as i hated having the feeling that i was going to pass out at times xxx There is one thing i take my tablet before i go too bed now i have a snack with them and thats when i noticed a change in the way i have been feeling - not sure if you want to try that?

Hope you are feeling brighter very soon

Sam xxxxxxx

I'm the same as sugarmum, they haven't made me constipated in fact just the opposite think i might try taking them before bed. I tend to take the tablet with a glass of OJ or apple juice, i know someone mentioned not taking them with dairy but i was also told not to take them with caffeine either....was anyone else told this?

You should start to feel better in a week or so hun once your iron levels are up a bit.
