The plug is what is, for lack of a better word, lodged in the cervix, it is what creates the barrier between the vagina and the uterus. Cervical mucus is just the discharge created and is usually clear to creamy in color. The plug, if it comes out before deliver, will look snot-like. It can have color to it, it can come out in bits or in big lumps. If you want to see what it can look like, just google mucus plug and go to the images.
