Bleeding gums??

Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem? Ive heard its quite common during pregnancy but Im really worried about gum disease and loosing my teeth!

Im brushing like 3 times a day now with mouthwash and flossing once a day but my gums still bleed... I saw an advert on the telly for some other sort of mouthwash that helps with gum disease... does anyone know what its called? Or know of anything similar?

Im trying to find an NHS dentist in my area but theres nothing, and I really can't afford to go private so it's not really an option until I find somewhere thats taking new NHS patients.

Thanks in advance

I know what you mean about finding a nhs dentist.
I was very lucky at the beginning of my pregnancy a bit of my tooth broke off and i was in agony so i phoned nhs direct and they gave me a number for the local dental helpline. They got me in the next day local to get it treated etc then upon seeing my teeth (havn't been for 6 years and had to have intravenous valium previously for all work) and realising i was phobic they sent me to a nhs phobic specialist dentist. It takes an hour on the bus to get there but well worth it!

When i was there last time they did recommend a mouthwash i could use that deals with any bleeding gums etc but i forgot the name of it .....ill try and post it if i find it.

Anyway you are entitled to all this free work so my point is that i think you should contact nhs direct for them to give you your local dental helpline number and start saying that the bleeding gums are making them puffy etc and really lay it on thick so you get seen. Or have you got a tiny niggly tooth that you could pretend is worse?? its worth a go......worked for me!

Let us know how you get on

well bleeding gums are normal during pregnancy mine blled as well almost every brushing. I f you have good teeth you shouldnt worry about them falling out though I had to switch to a soft bristle tooth brush they also make extra soft have you tried that? Hope all goes well

I too have bleeding gums when i brush and they are sometimes swollen too! I had a few cavities pre pregnancy so I'm sure I'll have more after as it is common because baby takes all your calcium. I think I'm going to wait until after LO is born to go to the dentist though. For now I just use regular mouth wash.

Hiya Linzi i am in the exact same position as you...my gums wont stop bleeding!!! It may be worth asking your midwife about a dentist nearby that accepts NHS patients...thats what i did and she told me one...went for a check up last week...he just told me to brush my teeth properly...seemed more concerned about a filling that i need...lol. xx

I had a problem with that in the first tri, not so much now but maybe later on? I'm not sure about the mouthwash seeing as you live in the UK and I live in Canada, but I hope it all works out!

I have been getting bleeding gums for about a month now - have never had it before! I guess it is just a pregnancy thing. I spoke to the dentist about it and he said as long as you are regularly brushing and flossing it should be fine.

I have had bleeding gums as well throughout my pregnancy, went into the dentist (luckily DH has decent insurance and it covers our dental) and had a cleaning--which hurt, made my gums bleed loads. They just told me to make sure I got in there and flossed really well (even if it did make my gums bleed)
