Newborn size clothes... advice from a new mummy

Ok... so i know as first time mums we all wanna know should we bother much with newborn size as they will only be in them a short while. Well... I assumed i shouldnt get too much because i come from a family of big babies. Then my little chunk was born 15 days late and weighed 9lbs 9.5oz and some of his newborn size things are too big!!! I couldnt fit him into his coming home outfit because the trousers (neborn size at tesco) were way too large But he was a long baby as well. I suppose with sleepsuits (with built in feet) they would outgrow them sooner as the length would be an issue but my advice is certainly..... get a lot of small size stuff even if you have to go cheap (ebay bundles are good, almost all my clothes come from asda and tesco ) I cannot imagine how mums with smaller babies manage to get clothes to fit if many of my newborn ones are too large for him but I imagine the newborn size would fit an average size baby for a decent lenghth of time... certainly worth the money at least

Hope this helps

i found this too with my last baby, so i am buying extra newborn/first size, they grow soon enough into 0-3 months, but definitely stock up on the first size babygros and vests, comfort is important in the first few weeks

Thanks for the great advice hun I figured this might be the case but never thought it would be a problem with say a 9lb baby!

Luckily mum got me some clothes off a site equivalent to eBay and some of them are in preemie size which should fit him well while he's still on the smaller side So I've packed a few different outfits for him to wear home just incase certain things don't fit.

Thanks again xx

I dont have many newborn clothes - and what I do have has mostly gone into her hospital bag - Luckily Mothercare is 5 minutes down the road from the hospital - so I have warned the OH he might have to dash out and get a load of vest and grows in!

I was told not to buy newborn stuff because i would get loads given to me as pressies - I havent had any at all!!

lol dm2 my DS was .5 lb bigger than your LO at birth but obviously longer as his newborn stuff didnt fit a all the lenght on all the sleepsuits was too short i had to chop off the feet of them with sissors the first time we put him in one then have mum bring in lots of 0-3 stuff for the next day,

for average size babys though newborn stuff should fit a few weeks at least, and if i have a small baby i have a friend who had a premie back in Jan who lives up the road and she will im sure loan us some smaller stuff, i think i have about 4 complete changes of clothes in newborn size,

Isobelle was 7lbs 5oz and very dainty, born at 41+4 and nothing fit her properly until she was 4 weeks - we had to stop by mothercare on the way home and buy a teeny tiny snowsuit (premmie size) which still looked silly big on her for a couple of weeks.

Dont underestimate how tiny youre babies could be! Even now she still fits into some newborn vests and her favourite jacket is first size from asda... even tho shes a healthy 15lbs 7oz now!

I felt silly in hospital even tho the clothes we bought were newborn - they were still very big and it looked like we'd tried to dress her in 6mths clothing.

Good luck with your immenant arrivals! x

Morgan was 9lb 6oz none of his newborn stuff fitted him & I bought waaaay too much!!!! I found for the first few weeks sleepsuit wise... Only the "Next Up To 1 Month" fitted him perfect!!! They were a god send! He definatly wasn't small enough for newborn and 0-3 drowned him. If I were to have another LO I'd definatly get the next 1s again!!!

As for how many sleepsuits.. I'd say atleast 10 when Morgan was first born his nappys were a pain and used to leak through the side... Some days this would happen 3 or 4 times.. Then they can throw up over them!!!

And I found you can NEVER have enough bibs I had around 50 and still found myself hunting for them!!!!

X
