Anyone understand blood pressure??

I really don't understand blood pressure, I don't have a clue about it.
But every midwife apt. my blood pressure has been perfect, as they say.
Anyway at todays apt. the midwife said 'oooh it's high. Have you been running around?'
And I was thinking, well I have been sitting still for the last half hour waiting in the waiting room..
She said she would check it again at the end of the apt. but we both forgot.!

It was 140/90

She didn't seem concerned, but is it anything to worry about ?

If it was consistently high then it would be something to cause some concern, but 140/90 is right on the cusp of being borderline high. High would be anything 160/100 and above.

Basically the top number is your systolic and the maximum pressure in your heart as it pumps out. The bottom is the diastolic and is the maximum in your heart as it receives blood back in. When your heart has to work extra hard for some reason, blood pressure will increase as the heart pumps harder and often faster as well. Some reasons might be exercise or a blockage or excess fatty tissue pressing down on arteries, therefore narrowing the blood's passage through them. When we are nervous or anxious, the heart naturally pumps harder and faster and that causes raised BP. In some people, like me, this is a real problem and causes significant raises in BP - I have been diagnosed with medical anxiety and white coat hypertension.

Your MW should take it again a couple of days later as if it is a big jump then there could be a reason for it other than you being in a rush.

Yes, Lankydoddle explained it well....

What they usually are concerned about is 'Pre-eclampsia' which can lead to 'eclampsia' if untreated; SUPER HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, protein in the urine, severe headaches (which a women could then have a seizure and or a stroke)....this can be very harmful because when the woman is having a seizure, this inhibits the babies oxygen from the mother (brain damage/death), if the mother's blood pressure gets too high....she can have a stroke....thus can be very harmful to the baby and the mother. Fetal and maternal death can occur.

p.s.- I just want to add that the only treatment for pre-eclampsia is the birth of
your baby.....that is why the doctor's/midwifes watch your blood pressure so closely, so you
never reach the stage of 'eclampsia'

It's at the 'high end of normal' as my MW would say. All depends on what your 'normal' BP readings are though. If you were usually 100/60 then it's quite a decent rise, but if your normal BP is 120/80 then the rise isn't as significant.

Your BP goes up towards the end of pregnancy anyway, plus the waiting around could have made you anxious! When do you next see your MW?

Two weeks before that was 114/68
And two weeks before that was 119/78

Im not seeing the midwife untill next Thursday, providing I haven't gone into labour by then.

As lankydoodle says.

I have terrible white coat hypertension, it's rarely below 140/90 when taken by a medical professional. But I have had various tests confirming that I don't actually have a problem with high BP.

Yeah the jump to 140/90 isn't that big from your normal BP so I wouldn't worry too much.
Another reason they keep a closer eye on things is if the top number jumps by 30 or the bottom number jumps by 20 or more - so I wouldn't worry too much, you'll be fine to be checked next week x

Yes, 140/90 is what they call 'pre-hypertension'. It is borderline, and I would just continue to monitor your blood pressure, I would not worry to much about it...but, keep an eye on it.

-maybe you could buy a blood pressure monitor/machine? Health stores sell them pretty reasonable. I have 2 (one digital) and one (manual- more accurate).....but, anything is better than nothing. I graduated with my RN (Registered Nurse) in May of last year, so we were required to purchase these items, which I am now thankful I have~*

I take my blood pressure everyday

My BP was 122/90 (my hubby was going on tour and I was a bit stressed) and they made me go for another appointment! Just important for you to be aware of anything like severe headaches, abdominal pain high up, lots of fluid retention esp in face, and blurry vision. I'd watch your salt intake and just relax. When's your next appointment?
