Sorry things didn't go so well. Perhaps, they are doing the A1C test on you which shows what your levels have averaged at the past couple of months, not just the past couple of hours. The normal on the A1C test is 7. Or maybe your meter reads differently? I'm not sure if there is anyone else from England with GD right now.

But don't let one reading get you down. I was told it will take a couple of days of eating the right combination of proteins and carbs to keep my levels low. I'm noticing this week they are consistently even lower than last week (when I was indulging a bit more). So, just keep at it and you and your LO will be fine.

Hi I am new on here, havent posted at all yet, but just want to reply to Emmeauk12, as I am also from UK.

I was diagnosed with GD at about 28 weeks, I didnt even have the GTT, my sugar levels were so high, I was put straight on insulin.

At my highest I had a sugar level of 13+, so it was quiet high.

I was taught how to use the insulin pen, I have a one for the day and a different one for the night, they are really easy to use and if you inject properly you dont even feel a thing.

I just wanted to reassure you that even if you do end up on insulin, it isnt as bad as you think and you soon get used to it.

You will probably have a scan to check on your babies growth too, luckily they caught my diabetes really early and my baby is right on target.

That is something for you to hang on to, if you do end up on insulin, at least it is helping to keep baby healthy.

Hope this helps you a little, and I am here if you need someone to talk to.

Jue xx

pepperflake i did wonder if they misdiagnosed me but not anymore..
my sugar fasting levels are like 90 every morning, thats pretty high, its really the max u should be. during the day it totally depends on what i eat, it can be in the 90's but its also been 130 a lot after eating things like sandwiches.
i try go for a walk if its high. i test a lot more than they told me to coz i wanna know where im at so i can know what i can eat, like if im high already eating a potato with dinner is a no-no or a fruit is just gonna make me higher.
ive notice when im high it takes about 3 hours for me to come down.
o well im glad we are all buddies here and hope we can support each other.

Thanks Jue and Pepperflake! I think I will be put on insulin next week when they have got he results of my blood tests which show my average I can take a pill but it isnt so well experimented in pregnant woman as insulin.

does potatoe bring sugar levels up lots then? Because I ate baked cod and low fat oven chips with runner beans for dinner last night and it sent me up to 10.2, when i was 5.0 before.

I ate really well yesturday and my readings were good until dinner. Just dont know where i went wrong.

How do you bring your levels down? I wanted to go for a walk but it was dark and scarey outside so i tried going up and down the stairs but only lasted five minutes

Also, how come my levels were so high but i was starving??

I will do anything i can to help my little one. Two weeks ago he was desperately underweight so a little growth wont hurt. But because of the SB diagnoses, hypertension and now this, i feel like such a failure. I am a healthy active and fit and in my mid twenties and I really look after myself. So why does everything have to go wrong?? I have no idea what tom is going to be like when he comes out and I am losing stregnth Anyone of these things I can deal with on their own.

Emmea12uk, try not to let all of this get you down. You're doing everything you can, just drew some bad luck. I don't think they know for sure what causes hypertension and GD every time but genetics might have something to do with it in your case. It's not that you are doing anything wrong, your body just needs a little extra help. Pregnancy takes a huge toll. I'm sure it's overwhelming but I'm certain you can handle the challenges you have been given and it will all be worth it when you hold your LO. No matter what you face, your love for your little boy will help you through.

The main thing you want to watch is how many carbohydrates you take in and there are carbs in almost everything! I saw a dietitian and she gave me a booklet with some information. Basically, I am supposed to limit my carb intake to 30 grams at a time and to eat 6 times a day. An 8 oz glass of milk has 11 grams and a slice of bread has 15 grams so thats almost all the carbs I can have at one time. Like cupcake, if I eat a sandwich with 2 slices of whole wheat bread and have a cup of milk, my sugar goes way up. Potatoes are definitely starchy. Your runner beans may even be high in carbs. Most things that are supposed to be good for you under normal circumstances probably have a high carb content and will raise your sugar level. Things I had no clue about! Do a search for 'carb counter' and then look up what you are eating for its carb content.

One thing the dietitian told me was that the worst time to eat a lot of carbs is at breakfast. For some reason, if you consume more than 30 grams then, it will keep your levels higher longer than if you had eaten it later in the day. Also, its important to have a snack before bedtime and not go more than 10 hours without eating between bedtime snack and breakfast.

cupcake, I do think I am borderline, at the very least. When I first started testing, I was around 90 every morning but the past week or so of watching what I eat has brought those levels down to the 70's and 80's. I'm also a tiny bit more energetic overall.

I am very glad to have you ladies to talk to about this. It makes it a lot easier to know I am not alone.

girl i was asking myself the same question. Both my husband and mom are insulin dependant diabetics. so i basically live diabetes. potatoes and rice are killers and so is bread and pasta, you gotta keep that in total moderation. obviously pure forms of sugar like sugar itself, chocolate, ice cream, cake ( a double whammy sugar and carbs ) and soda are no-nos.

the best thing you can do emmea is eat a lot of meat and veg, fish, you have to eat carbs because its very dangerous not to, i dont know the exact ratio but i recommend you see what your sugar does when you eat them. like pepperflake said if you had a good breakfast it totally helps. instead of going for bread or cereal for breakfast go for eggs, low fat yoghurt, and one fruit.

the fruits that have a ton of sugar are grapes, watermelon and oranges.
fruit juices also have a lot of sugar. so i go for an apple or peach. i eat about two fruits a day and not at the same time. that seems to work.
the only way to get sugar down without insulin ( and diet) is exercise and lord knows its not easy in our condition but even a short walk will help.
its not gonna be forever hun so hang in there. its even tougher for you with your other problems. when you are down come on here for a chat. well support you. your diet will come right and if you cant do it alone ie just diet so ull take some insulin it will all be for the good of your baby.

Awww..guys i am so glad you are here!!

I had toast for breakfast and my levels were ok - but I like the idea of scrambled eggs on one small slice of granary break and yogert for breakfast with fruit juice. Then i will be able to have a sandwich for lunch with loadsa ham and maybe a piece of fruit.

What do you snack on? I was told rich tea buscuits but i dont know what that does to my sugar levels yet.
