The upper number (systolic) is the pressure in your arteries when your heart is working (contracting). The lower number (diastolic) is the pressure in your arteries when your heart is at rest.
Obviously the closer the lower- resting number is to the upper-contracting number that's bad. The heart isn't getting a chance to rest well prior to another beat, and is working very hard.
Also if the heart is working EXTRA hard during the working phase of the beat (upper number is high) that's no good either.
And when BOTH the systolic, and diastolic numbers continue to increase through pregnancy, that's also no good...
Someone already mentioned the worry cutoff for docs is 140/80 (if I remember correctly the diastolic number). That's when they decide to keep you another couple hours and make sure your BP decreases. IF not then chances are you'll be tested for preeclampsia type disorders.
