Ask the midwife when you actually go into labour. At my unit the hospital policy says it is not recommended but this was due to a 'penis being cut' incident. However, it is at the discretion of the midwife who would need to take responsibility as a registered practitioner. However, I let the FOB of the lady I delivered early hrs this morning to cut the cord. So you could say I went against hospital policy. It was a very relaxed environment, he wasn't panicky and baby was in good condition. They didn't even ask to cut it either I just offered. Needless to say that meant alot to them. I do say to parents that sometimes it may not be appropriate.

So ask the midwife who will deliver you.

I know. I mean it's not the end of the world if he can't but it's an experience isn't it? Fair enough if other hospitals don't allow it but that doesn't seem to be the case. I'm certainly going to ask further at my next appointment. I was half tempted to ring the delivery suite to ask why but I'm sure they'll be doing more important things then answering silly questions! Haha..

That is strange! My husband was not able to cut our daughters cord but it was because she needed the nicu team right after birth. But that was a health issue, not a hospital policy.

Thats weird. My dh didn't want to do it, and I didn't care one way or the other, but even with my c-sec they would have let him!

At my antenatal class they said there had been an incident so MWs closely watched partners doing it to make sure it was done properly. Apparently it's quite tough to. Cut and people sometimes struggle to make a clean cut because they think it'll be like cutting a ribbon! I hope they do let him though x

maybe ask on the day you're in labour - i don't know a midwife who wouldn't let the hubby "do the honours!"

Maybe if it's important to you, he may be allowed to if you birth at home? Just a thought.

If it's important to you, I'm sure you could arrange with the hospital before you go into labour to sign some sort of disclaimer that you wouldn't sue.
