Nuchal Fold??

Hi all

After speaking to my SIL i have some questions about this? Apparently when this measuerement is taken thats the way they assess your risk of DS? We do not get blood done in NI specifically for this, is there anywhere in my Green notes I can check what this is/was?? Is it measured at the 20wk scan??

Thanx

The nuchal fold is measured around 12 - 14 weeks. After that, the fluid is re-absorbed I believe.

Yes - this measurement is only reliable in the early scans...before 14 weeks. My NHS Trust does not offer the nuchal fold scan - we just get the blood test.

Some hospitals don't offer the blood test or the nuchal scan. I got offered to have the scan at 13 weeks xxx

Hi Hun, This makes me a bit cross for you They really should explain proceedures to new mothers and Im sorry you dont seem to know what you had and didnt, thats not fair. If I was you I would call up your health care provider and ask their policy on the care you receive and fine out if you did indeed have the NF scan when you had your dating scan at around 12 weeks. Thats what i have i my area, they take the measurement of the fluid at the back of the neck while they do they dating scan and we also have a blood test and we get a letter through telling us the risk factor of having Downs.
It annoys me that with all the other stuff ad informtion we have to read to care for our babies and the future they cant just explain things a bit better, at my apoointments I alwasy ask loads of things because I know if i dont, I wont get told good luck hun xx

on the paper put in your notes from your first scan it should say if it was a nuchal test scan or just a dating one, they do the fold test as routine here but only tell you results if you want to know and you can refuse the blood test ( i did as i am low risk anyway ) if you want to, i cant see my notes around right now but im sure on the scan results page that they stuck in that it gives the results from the scan

Over here, we were offered the tests, but they weren't done automatically.
We opted for the ultrasound, but because we were low risk, we opted out of the blood tests.

Thanks so much Girls, I was just speaking to one of the other NI girls and she has had nothing either. I have now got myself in a right pickle over it and it cracks me up that we are just supposed to wonder and wait etc. I was told at both 12 & 20 week scans that everything looked ok and that was about it. TBH my midwife is pretty useless and im getting a bit sick of her. Im 31 weeks so I think il just have to grin and bear her now. For example, I had a really red and swelled throat the other day, and when I asked her if it was ok to take Paracetamol with strepsils as well she said "wouldnt know, you would need to ask the doctor!"

WTF!!! Shes been a midwife for 15years!!!
