Please help, leaving in an hour and need advice!

I have chronic ear infections and it's so bad today that I'm using HAIRCLIPS to itch inside. I have a burst eardrum in one ear and a slightly perforated one in the other.

I booked an appointment to see my GP, but he would only givbe me one for thursday morning. I am killing myself with itch! I am actually sticking EVERYTHING into my ears to stop the itch.

What I wanna know is.. have any of you girls got any over the counter ear drops that are okay to take when pregnant? Last time the doctor wouldn't give me anything to FIX them, but I wondered if I could get some soothing ones???

Any help would be appreciated... leaving in 58 minutes to the MIL's where we'll be proceeding to ASDA and the ASDA pharmacy!

Noooooo! I got a telling off for using anything drop wise in my ears, the doctor had to go through a massive medical book for pregnant ladies and found I could only take 2 different types of antibiotics and codeine for the pain. Apparantly the drops have something in them that is bad for pregnancy :s I still have an ear infection in the right ear and its been 2 months !

Get yourself some cocodamol from asda and hope they knock you out until thurs xx

Oh sorry! Thought that was someone jumping down my throat...

Never mind eh?!

I think my GP saying to me "do not use any type of ear drops during pregnancy" was enough for me to listen!

My GP also struggled to find eardrops suitable for me to use during pregnancy and said you have to be extremely careful about self-medicating in pregnancy.

My husband's boss's wife is a medical receptionist and told me to take a certain sleeping tablet when I started suffering with insomnia... I had an appt with my GP anyway, and mentioned the insomnia and what L had told me to do/take and he gasped in horror and said I should not self-medicate during pregnancy, and should only take things prescribed by him - a qualified doctor! He actually said 'leave the doctoring to the doctors!' when I told him a medical receptionist had recommended it!

Of course paracetomol and things like that are fine, but if you have a particular illness like an ear infection, it's best to chat to a doctor. Have you tried NHS Direct? They do have doctors who will chat to you on the phone, but it takes a while for them to get back to you.

Maybe you could check with the pharmacist, they are sometimes a bit more clued up than GPs on what you can and can't take. If you are really in distress I'd ask the doctor to go through the BNF (a book of all medicines licensed in the UK) with you to see if there is anything you can take.

I spoke to the pharmacist today. She said as it's OBVIOUSLY infected (from the green gunk coming out, the itch, and as they're perforated it's blatantly gonna get infected) she can give me Earex or Otex but thats ONLY gonna unblock, which isn't my problem and she said she can't give me ANYTHING else she has for ear infections without my doctors permission. The only way I can see an emergency doctor is to phone at 7pm, make an appointment for sometime that night before 4am, and then treck an hour to the surgery. My doctor is in Boots and he only does "emergency" appointments at his other practice, which is out in the middle of nowhere. =(

I'm using olive oil and cotton buds and just trying to keep it clean. So painful. =(

Thank you all for your advice though!!!!! xxx
