No, not unrealistic - I birthed at home without so much as a paracetamol. I got through it with deep relaxation/hypnobirthing, a good understanding of the physiological processes happening to my body, and intense, hard back massage and incredible emotional support from my amazing husband. I doubt I could have done it without committed preparation though.

I'm planning on a home water birth using hypnobirthing. I will have entonox available, but not anything else.

I have been working on the hypnosis and breathing so that it is hopefully second nature when I need it - that feels really important to me, as it would be easy to forget it if it isn't something that I am are used to doing. There is a particular way of breathing (surge breathing) to help the contractions be shorter and more efficient that I hope will help.

And my Mum just had entonox with me, and that was a standard flat on the back, no moving around, hospital birth in the late 70s.

Good luck on a natural birth. I just wanted to say don't let the thought or what anyone says put you off an epidural. I was anti-epidural before I went into labour but once I was half way, I caved and got one and it was brilliant. I was worried about it being in my spine and the risks etc etc but I have to say it was nothing to worry about and if you feel you need it, just go for it.

Persevere with your natural birth plan though, good luck and I hope it goes that way just don't be disappointed if it changes whilst you are in labour. I was exactly the same with my views towards labour and they all changed during

I don't plan using anything but water (had the all clear from my midwife to use the pool providing the hospital say so), heat (heat packs/water bottle), massage techniques, aromatherapy/homeopathy, breathing/relaxation/hypnobirthing and visualisation, having familiar smells/things around me in the room I give birth in and possibly the gas and air. However, I am keeping an open mind as I've never had a baby before and realise things may not go to plan in lots of ways.

I have had 4 with just gas and air hun. Can be done, just depends on you pain threshold. What got me through more than anything was knowing once baby was delivered the pain stopped.
