Ina mays guide to child birth is a fantastic book and has lots of births where women use no pain releif!

I dont think its unrealistic. From what ive been told if your wanting to go down this route then its best to leave the gas and air until your REALLY need it.

We're planning a home birth using tens, gas and air, water birth and hypnobirthing to control the discomfort.

i done it and im the biggest sissy in the world!!!

i done it with my second but really she was my first birth because i had an emergency c-section at 35 weeks so didnt even go through any labour.

i was soooooooo scared, like you wouldnt believe! but when it come to it i done it on gas and air, i will admit i did ask for the epidural a few times but MW kept sayin i didnt need it and im so glad she did. I thought gas and air was amazing!!!

Thanks everyone!! You've really put my mind at ease! My dad is my birth partner and I've made my feelings clear to him so he knows what I want and don't want to happen. Obviously, things may change but it's really reassuring to know that it can be done! When I've mentioned it to other people, they've all looked at me as if I've got two heads and give that 'ha ha, we'll see' look!

Thanks again

xx

I don't think its unrealistic and hope to go most or all of the way with relaxation, water, possibly a tens machine, lots of movement etc as the others have said (but in the birthing centre not at home). I will probably have some gas and air towards the end if I feel I need something but I am really wary about pethidine and don't want an epidural either.

However as someone else said nothing to be ashamed of if you do give in and get an epi. I just really hope I don't give in!

Also, this is my first so its really inspiring to hear that so many of you have done it that way before!

on my first i had an epidural, on my second i had one shot of pethidene near the end and on my third i just had gas and air. I am hoping to just go with the gas and air again, it is possible but i recommend that you go with the flow and keep your options open.

In answer to your OP question, I dont think your being unrealistic to want just gas & air. Women have been giving birth for years with no pain relief at all, and have done just fine. I am planning on using a Tens, hypnotherapy, water, aromatherapy and Gas & Air for my birth. I am planning a homebirth so they dont bring out any other drug anyway. I know a lot of people have a go with the flow kind of attitude but I know that in order for me to have a successful, calm birthing experience I need to be in the right frame of mind and seeing how it goes may mean I cant cope and will need to be transferred to the hospital for an epidural e.t.c and that I dont want AT ALL. So I am going to pace myself with the options I have listed above. It may not go in the order I want it too, but I am going to give it my best shot You can do it hun! x x x
