I'm Currently Feeling: | Me- red hair (deep red, not orange) and hazel eyes- born with straight hair then it went naturally curly when I hit high school
OH- brownish/blonde hair (but had very blonde, almost white hair as a kid), hazel eyes (almost gray eyes), hair is really thick and curly/wavy.
I'm curious to see what our little boy will look like. |

I'm Currently Feeling: | Dark hair colour and the darker eye colour is the dominant gene. Just how science works itself out I guess?
Me - Dark dark brown hair, Black eyes
Him - Black hair, dark dark brown eyes
His mother - blue eyes
There's a very very slim chance my son might have his grandmothers eyes, although it's not likely to happen, looking at my gene's and his. |

I'm Currently Feeling: | Karen-
I'm not sure where your husband is from, but there have been some studies done on Asian men and women who live as nomads who have exhibited blonde hair and blue eyes. They've determined this occured with migrations from european countries thousands of years ago (trade routes etc.). |

I'm Currently Feeling: | So, there's blondes in my family with blue eyes, is there a chance that that gene could be in me somewhere? And if so, would blonde + ginger = orange?
Rich has the ginger gene. He has dark hair but many people in his family are ginger. |

Well that's the other really cool thing about genetics... we have genotypes (the genetic makeup) and phenotypes (what that genetic makeup makes us LOOK like).
IOW your phenotype is Dark dark brown hair and black eyes... but you have no idea what your genotype is- other than you have dominant genes for dark brown hair and black eyes. But depending on the number of alleles involved, and how many RECESSIVE genes (and their type) you and he carry, you might have as much as a one in 4 chance of getting something you weren't expecting.
He may or may not carry the recessive blue gene from his mama... |

Rich has the ginger gene. He has dark hair but many people in his family are ginger. | If you have direct family members that have a blonde phenotype and you have a dark phenotype then yes it is possible for you to carry a recessive set of genes for 'blonde' genotype. The expression of that in your baby will depend on what Rich contributes to the pot |

I'm Currently Feeling: | Loving this science!! No one in my family is blond or had blond tinges - but my twin sister.
I am dark brown with definate red in my hair. But I don't see any red in my partner's family. So fingers crossed - a blond or brown haired boy. i wanna save the red for a little girl! |

So odds are my girl will have brown hair, but not sure about the eyes? | Well, as poppy was explaining (so very well) your blue eyed hubby most likely has a genotype 'bb' (each allele 'b' coming from each of his parents). That he has a phenotype of blue (you see his blue eyes) means he has both recessive blue genes. If he had just one 'B' (brown eye gene) he would look brown eyed.
You on the other hand could be 'BB' brown dominant gene from each of your parents OR 'Bb' you could carry a recessive blue gene from way back when somewhere, and STILL look brown eyed for both these.
If you carry a BB genotype, all your babies will ALWAYS be brown eyed because you will always contribute the dominant B gene to their makeup. (Obviously there are more alleles involved in eye color so ALWAYS is not a real good indicator of genetics, but I hope you get the idea.)
But if you carry a recessive blue in there 'Bb' you only have a one in two chance of throwing a brown eyed child. And all your kids will have one recessive blue gene. Bb = brown eyes, bb = blue eyes.
B b <---Your genotype
b Bb bb <--- Your kids' genotype
b Bb bb "
