Hmm, I hear what you're saying, Emma. A ginger boy is not so good!! Mind you, I fancy the pants off Shaun in Eastenders and he's ginger, so there are always exceptions I spose!

Quote:
The allele for red hair is recessive - which means that if you have red hair (naturally, of course!), you got a gene for red hair from each of your parents. If you have one gene for brown hair (which is dominant) and one for red hair, what color hair do you think you'll have? If you guessed brown - you're right!
So, my baby should have brown hair and brown eyes! Not convinced though.

Daddy is blond and blue, I am dark and blue. Both have pasty skin. Everyone in both families has blue eyes. His family are all dark haired - apart from him. so mine will be blue eyes and pot luck on the hair! Could be either dark, blond, ginger!

From doing biology at school - this is my attempt to explain it! There is probably a genetic scientist on this forum who his going to correct me now!

It is all to do with chromosomes. For each chromosome you have, you have two separate genes - one from your mother and one from your father.

For things like hair colour/eye colour it comes down to allelles (I think I spelt this correctly) which is part of the chromosome. Each allelle is either dominant (usually shown in genetics as a capital letter) or recessive (shown as a lower case letter). Dominant allelles overpower recessive ones. Now dark hair usually comes from dominant allelles and blonde/lighter hair usually comes from recessive allelles.

Sounds simple - well here is the complication...

As you have two allelles (one from each parent), you can have dark hair and have one dominant allelle and one recessive allele. In the case of dark hair - Rr. So the dominant allele led you to having dark hair even though you still have a recessive allele in your genetic code. Now if that person then went on to having babies with someone with blonde hair (rr), they would only have a 50% chance of having a blonde baby and a 50% chance of having a dark haired baby - ie Rr, rr, Rr, rr (it is easier to see if you make an X and O type grid). So just because you have dark hair and your husband has blonde hair does not necessarily mean you will have a dark haired baby.

Red hair, I am not sure about, as this is seen as a separate allelle altogether and it is very difficult to inherit red hair as red hair is always recessive and quite rare.

I hope this has not bored too many people.

xxx

DH: COPPER red hair when younger, lightened to strawberry blonde now. Blue Eyes, freckles all over.
Me: LIGHT blonde hair, darkened a bit with some red in it now. Green eyes, some freckles.

She's doomed. =) However, everyone else in my family has darker hair/skin. Everyone else in HIS family has darker hair/skin/eyes. She might take after the rest of the family and look NOTHING like US!
