I'm Currently Feeling: | Membrane sweeps. I've been given evening primrose oil to take orally and inject vaginally to help ripen my cervix, and my midwife wants to start doing weekly membrane sweeps on me.
How quickly would the membrane sweep induce labour? Or does it ever? I want to give birth to him sooner than 40 weeks, for one thing he is measuring large (head circumfrance is at 40 week gestation size). | | | | Status: Offline

| I don't even know what a membrane sweep is!!
But, here in France, if you have not given birth by your due date, they just induce you anyway as long as LO is in the right place and you have started to dilate. | | | | Status: Offline

I'm Currently Feeling: | I had a membrane sweep 2 days past my due date. It did nothing ... They don't always work. If they are going to work, they put your into labour 24-48 hours afterwards, but mine didn't ... And nor did it work for a few other women I know. |

I'm Currently Feeling: | I had a membrane sweep, and gave birth within 24 hours. To be honest i think your body has to be ready for labour to start for it to work. | | | | Status: Offline

I'm Currently Feeling: | "Membrane sweep", also known as membrane stripping, or "stretch and sweep" in Australia and the UK - during an internal examination, the midwife moves her finger around the cervix to stimulate and/or separate the membranes around the baby from the cervix. This causes a release of prostaglandins which can help to kick-start labour.
Yes, I have heard for some ladies it just did not work, period, others, they went straight into labor. It depends on whether your cervix has softened enough.. | | | | Status: Offline

I'm Currently Feeling: | I had one, it's horrible! Maybe because I'm very sensitive to pain... But she inserted 2 fingers in, sweep her fingers around my cervix (which felt horrible) and lasted for a about a minute.
I think that in my case it helped a little because I lost my mucus plug not long after. I was already dilated to a 2cm, we'll see if I've made any progress this afternoon at my appointment. |
