Mild Fetal Pyelectasis

I just got back my ultrasound results from yesterday. it turns out he has mild kidney pyelectasis... and I do not know what to do. I am so worried, so distraught. I am 36 weeks and knowing that this is a (sort of) sign of downs scares me SO MUCH. This is my seventh ultrasound so the fact they only just saw it is strange too, could it have formed this fast? They checked his kidneys two weeks ago because I was measuring three weeks ahead consistently. My amniotic fluid level is fine.

Has anyone else gone through this?

My midwife also never mentioned that he may have downs becaue of this, she simply said he would need followup, and ultrasounds on his kidneys after he's born. But reading on the internet people are saying it's a sign of downs. So I am confused.

Wouldn't it have appears at my 20 week if that were the case??

Perhaps it is a sign of Downs normally but I doubt it if it is in your case because that would of been picked up earlier. I'm sure you and your baby will be okay. Dont be too scared. Good luck!

Thanks so much Karen, I am trying not to worry but it's just... SO sudden. I only have a few weeks left to prepare myself if it's a possibility. I am just in tears.

I have no experience of this at all, but symptoms which can be as a result of serious conditions can also be completely isolated and nothing to do with something like downs. I imagine they would have been able to see down's much much earlier.

I myself am coping with carrying a child with a major disorder and I know what the waiting is like - it is complete hell. So loads and loads of . try and keep positive - the internet is your worst enemy. Trust your maternal instincts and try not to worry about it - there is nothing at all you can do to change things apart from sending good vibes to your baby!

Good luck - when do you have to go back?

Yes, it doesn't make much sense that it would be connected to down syndrom at this point... I trust my midwife would have mentioned it, too. After the initial scare that the internet can sometimes instill, I've really calmed down. I'd love him no matter what, anyways.

I'm so sorry you are going through such a hard thing too. I am fortunate it is only potentially going to be serious, and the potential is very low. I can only imgaine what a tough time you must be going through.. It just doesn't seem very fair, does it?

No it doesnt seem fair at all, but anything affecting our babies, no matter how serious feels liek the end of the world. Potential or a slight risk is all it takes to make us panic and only "potential" doesnt really make you feel much better does it? but i bet it is all easily forgotten once the little one is in our arms for the first time and the worrying is all over. We will soon find something new to worry us!
